Case International 956XL hydraulic issues

Hi Everyone,
I am a bit new to this so please bear with me!! I have a Case International 956xl, 2wd, been an extremely reliable performer and not let me down til just recently! The hydraulics seemed to have played up, and cant say i know a lot about it so glad of any advice! during the cold weather recently she stood out in the yard, and i tried to move her in out of the snow but when i started her i suddenly noticed she had a stream of oil coming out the side of her! basically had blown the hydraulic oil filter/bowl on the side of the engine off. So put her together again, refilled the oil (expensive stuff these days haha) ans get her going again, anyway, a few days later and not so cold weather she did it again.....threw the filter accross the yard (and all my oil!!) So not sure whats up really, i think the must be a blockage or something somewhere that is making pressure in the system and the filter being the weakest point its that what gives first!

I did wonder if it was anything to do with the sensodraulic wheel/nob on the mudguard.. or is it something different???

Wondered of anyone has had anything else like this or know anything about it!!?? Think its the same system on several '56 series internationals.....any advice appreciated!
Cheers

The knob on the mud guard is just an external control. It should be turned fully anti-clockwise from memory when you are using the tractor.

Thanks Flat 10,
thats interesting.....i never could get the hang of it so in the end just left it the same position as it worked there! it is was 'twisted' would that cause back pressure do you reckon??

I don't profess to be an expert on the 56 series :) but did find this circuit diagram

Ah right, that is not strictly a filter, it's whats called the pilot pressure unit.
I suspect the RV is stuck, you need to get a pressure gauge to check it.
The pressure should be somewhere between 180 psi & 245 psi.

The relief valve is right there next to the metal filter gauze.

Thanks for that Gapples, that is v interesting....so that could explain why it is throwing the filter off if that return valve is sticking......

Sorry..probably sounds a bit stupid but do i need to put the system back together then start her up and check the pressure or whats the best way to do it?? Also any ideas on the best place to get a pressure gauge from??

You test it here, you'll need a 500 psi gauge plus adapters, any good hydraulic supplies should be able to sort you out.
The only thing that would trouble me is if that RV is stuck just what pressure will it take to blow off the tin pot ? IF it's over 500 psi you will knacker the the 500 psi gauge.
I'd strip & clean the RV first, that should ensure this doesn't happen 🤞

I've circled the pilot pressure unit & put an arrow on the RV 👍

Thanks for that, very interesting. I will certainly give that a go....wonder if the cold weather had made it stick or it could be worn??

Gives us a bit of homework to get on with!!

Also, while we have some knowledge here.....on the side of the engine there is a white screw on filter, to the left of that there is 2 black filter looking things.....would you know what these are?? Presume one of them is your 'pilot pressure regulator' as per the diagram??
Thanks

Thanks

The bigger white scree on filter lower down is engine oil filter, the smaller white filter above with the taps on is a water conditioner filter.
The 2 black bowls to the side, the solid steel ones are hydraulic high pressure filters.
The pilot pressure unit is the tin tin pot that's blowing off.
Hope this helps

Yes i see....thanks....that is interesting.

Looks like someone has tried to get one of the hydraulic high pressure filters off at some point! would these ever need changing?

Yes, every 1000 hours when you are supposed to change the hydraulic oil.
They get awfully tight, you want a 24 mm socket on a power bar, pull on the bar & hit the top of the filter area with a hammer, they usually come loose okay like that.

yes i see, it hasnt been off i the 3 years its been here and doesnt look like it hasnt been off for while before that! I guess it is going to need to muscle to get it off haha!
