Here, UHF is king amongst most industries including agriculture & transport
Thankfully we don't get many idiots ( not like the old CB days with idiots sounding like wannabe US truckies ) & most people are using it for work purposes, not for recreation
You want greater range or privacy, then we get into the HF radios, but that's another ball game

@Pheasant Surprise or @PSQ or @Mursal are the brains on this, I think.

VHF better for distance, UHF better for buildings, or summit like that...
We use UHF, because if everyone else in the countryside is using their noggins and is on the few allocated licensed VHF frequencies, then I’ve got all the allocated UHF frequencies to myself!
Vehicle mounted radios start at about £160 plus antenna, better paying a bit more and going digital, it’s not as simple as you’d think, they need specific programming for channels and ‘colour coding / CTCSS’ that stops you having to listen to every yammering sphincter within 5 miles.

Is there a device that I can wire into the radio speakers so when someone talks on the cb it mutes the radio and the cb chatter comes out of the radio speakers instead?

All the cb's I've fitted into din slots are tidy and out the way however it's a struggle to hear them, I though the above would be tidier than fitting a external speaker.

Just fit external speakers on mine, normally use a small car phone speaker which plugs into back of cb

2 CB bands here - 40 ch on HF, 40 ch on UHF as well.
UHF on the farm and in the trucks, still plenty on HF SSB as I just had a tune around with my ham rig and plenty of activity, bit of skip running as I could hear a few strayans. 15 metre ham band going flat out as well. And 80 m.

Too cool for me out there, rain pouring as well so I came in by the fire
