Actually you must never ever do that, in fact you should not even put actual cement in the mixer, just shake the empty bag at it, well I think that's what they do around here, then complain that it's not as good as ready mixAnd then a bit more just to make sure

a gift ,what strength is it ? if mixing your own concrete remember it will not be as strong as the cement used in ready mix (52.5n)mostly , yours could be 32.5n so be prepared to add a little extra for a good job
@S J H just an idea, when you come to mix it for your walls, if you need to buy more cement mix it half and half, half out of date half new. Of course this won't work if you've enough
I couldn't agree more .Are you for real - knowingly advising something like this is appalling, and subsequently puts businesses at risk!
I am at a loss as to what goes through people's heads sometimes. Life is hard for all businesses, some more than others, but to think practices like the above are without impact amazes me. This not only affects the innocent business, but inadvertently increases the cost of goods further down the lines through yearly adjustment of running costs!
should be on the bag somewhere or they may put it in a clarification like cem1 ,i never worry about sell by dates the key will be getting the mix right ,are you using a pan mixerI can't find the spec @Forever Fendt but thanks for that, I'll have a look tomorrow.

Yes I think I will be. I think I'll end up using one for round the house, so I might aswell get one bought, I've got a couple of jobs I could put it on this year as well. Do you reckon mixed ballast will be ok? Or better to buy 20mm and sand separate
do you want to borrow my glasses?I read that as round house then, I thought you was splashing out big time
do you want to borrow my glasses?
like me ,too long at home has fuddled your brainNot doing very well today am I. Need to go back to work and do something

I feel the same, I mixed up bag of ballast today and I'm knackered
I want to do some shuttered walls so as you say it will be handy, if I've only got one set of shutters then I'll need 2.5 cube per bay. It would too much as volumetric or minimix.Just out of curiosity, what are your £ savings on doing it yourself?
I did the figures a yr or so back and I couldn't match the cost (let alone quality) of ready mix on just buying the ballets and cement before labour.
There is an element of the 'handy factor' but for more than a cube or so it's just not worth it for me
Ballets is about £35 / ton bag which I think is 0.8m3
Cement was £3 a bag for me give or take.
I have a local mix on site firm who can mix about 12 m3 at any strength you ask.
For me it's not worth messing about
