Cereals.

Apart from the obvious machinery stands, any advice on a few interesting stands/people to look out for next week. Whats worth a look for a aspiring DD'er? What are some of you hoping to see/learn?

You need to come to the Oxford farming Conference debate on Thursday afternoon..."Why have UK wheat yields plateaued" I am going to need all the help I can get..... cos looking at all the data yields have not gone up since the mass change from inversion tillage(ploughing) to some form of non-inversion tillage or direct-drilling...but this was brought about by the need to reduce costs in the face of falling commodity prices....I am really looking forward to three O'clock next Thursday (when its over) ...not really I love the opportunity of a good discussion..:cautious:

Jim, All of the TAG/HGCA trials for the past 20years plus have been on ploughed plots, same for them. It is not the tillage method ! More likely loss of mixed farming/fertility and NVZ restrictions. Plus loss of burning and some chemistry like captifol etc.

Much as I'd love to watch Jim in action there's not a lot there for me.

I see on the website they charge £23 a ticket. I presume most farmers get free tickets through there agronomists etc?

With all the trade stands presumably being charged plenty it seems a bit of a rip off to me. Does it really cost more to lay on than LAMMA?

sorry for not beeing able to present a alternative for Cereals as the last years.
But even then peopel where able to get the best out of both worlds. A day at cereals and the evening a flight to the continent to have the next days some "controversial" input.
We are working on beeing able to have a alternative in 2014 though. i love the mix of cultures on such events. ;-) Especily the eveings at the lake side.....

I think we ought to have a "European Cereals"...Alternating between the UK, France and Germany...a visit to Cereals one year in three would be plenty for me...(I only go every year because I feel if I don't go... I will be missing something)...in between the I would suggest the we look at some much smaller regional events....more work I know... for example, as a customer of Frontier visiting their stand at Cereals is a total waste of time (Yes I do get a free cup of coffee and a chance to meet a few people) but for technical information that will really have an effect on my farm I go to one of their demonstration sites at Ledbury (8 miles away) there I can see varieties and systems which will have a major impact on my cropping and input decisions for the next cropping year...

Thanks Martin....will see you on Thursday...
Just returning to the JNG's original question.....
I think there will be a lot to see for direct-drillers....De Sangosse - (micro fertilisers), Glenside Group, Soil Fertility Services (biological farming systems) Calcifert (Granulated lime:whistle: ) Gypsum Supply group (Gypsum..!) to name but a few...but on the machinery front... Cousins(/Hutchinsons) and the work they are doing on black grass and very shallow cultivations will be very high on my list of stands to visit...along with Claydon, Mzuri, Aitchison, Sumo and McConnel...As we plan to grow a quite large area of winter beans 13/14 I will be looking at ways of applying avadex (to control brome and charlock) without spending a fortune on application kit..
It would have been good to have had a BASE UK stand but it is not a good way of spending members subscriptions (money is better spent on farm visits etc etc)...

Jim, thanks for your response and good luck on Thurs with your debate, unfortunatly im only there Wednesday and won't be able listen in. For me plant nutrition is a key thing at the moment, Im trying to understand soil balances and then tailor nutrition to our crops on our fields and not follow whats in the recommended rates in booklets designed for land very different than ours. So alot of questions to ask there and confuse myself a bit more. I mentioned it on another thread but my impressions from some talk and pictures of DD crops is that starter nutrition could be the key to better establishment, maybe not if conditions are fine and early drilling, but if anything outside that a bit of starter down the spout cannot harm and in general if it helps root growth its cost effective? So both starter products and application methods will get some attention. Maybe with a better uderstanding of what is needed within our individual farm gate we can raise these yields? Im not so sure broadacre recomendations can help us to the next level, it can only give us a base? We need to get better at what we do, I do anyway!

Does anyone know are there any cover crops on show, I know prob wrong time of year but anyone worth talking to? How to establish covers is something im also thinking about?

I mentioned this in another thread about the raping input industry and got shot down in flames.

My grandfather was growing the same yields as us now so why am I spending so much more on inputs and why have the seed breeders failed so miserably?

Where's our money going exactly?

Are you certain about growing the same yield?

Yields are definitely higher possibly not by a huge amount in some situations but they are and basically you are paying for them from a bottle. The gain is marginal in a poor year.
