Got one field needs a rest , any suggestions for a cheap and cheerful cover crop .

I'll lime it at the same time .

Just need something to scratch in .

Don't want another cereal , will mustard stand the winter ?
It did last year on our shoot . Could hardly walk through it right up to the end of the season. Don’t know about a hard winter though . Don’t bother with westerwolds. Expensive for what they are . What’s going in afterwards. Maybe some beans as a proper break( I’m only joking )

Go mustard at about 6-7 kg /ha cheap as chips, will grow very quickly , I have never seen it before but this year early drilled crops flowered at about 30cms high BUT have kept growing and I now have crops over a metre high!!

Is it worthwhile sowing mustard this late? Even in the sunny south east ok find it a bit disappointing after the second week of September.

Seems to grow quickly. This was sown a week Wednesday.

You don't want Westerwolds if it has the chance to set seed. This late you're limited to mustard if you want quick biomass but vetch is a legume & will grow this late, though will cost a few more £.

What non-cereals have you got in the shed you could sprinkle on & disc in? How long before you would want to grow these in the same field again?

Will you help clear snow?
