Harry Ferguson, businessman, engineer and inventor; twice offered and declined knighthood in the last ten years of his life; in response to a letter from Winston Churchill offering to submit his name, Ferguson declined on the ground that knighthoods should be reserved for servicemen and statesmen, whose financial rewards were relatively small, and should not be given to businessmen or industrialists with financial wealth

Autism covers a huge spectrum of child development issues from children with severe learning and communication disorders, to the vast majority who display features as not making eye contact ( ie about 99% of todays teenagers :) ) . It is widely diagnosed and sort as a panacea for parenting problems, and to gain educational help for middle class parents. Many people would argue that many of the mild cases are just bad parenting. Those children with severe Autism , do indeed need a lot of help as do the parents of these children.
Many of the brightest brains through out history, display very typical characteristics. Those who are the brightest in the arts and the scientific community, many of those who go on to found vast companies clearly demonstrate traits which would today, attract assistance in schools. Take Mark Zuckerburg, Elon Musk for 2

should that make him special then

No Im just saying for all the sh!t hes getting he has brought his autism to the fore in the public eye and Id say dont underestimate the positive impact that can have for others with autism and for public attitudes towards it. So for that I think hes a positive model.

Now the guy is obviously a wildlife obsessive so hes going to have a set of views not the same as you or me towards animals.

Autistic or not, the award of a CBE makes it look like the government is endorsing some fairly extreme views on animal rights.

It's an unwelcome and worrying development that highlights the complete lack of understanding the establishment has regarding rural issues and farming in particular.

Who did put his name on the list and what was the justification? Anybody know?

Chris Packham probably assumed the royal family were too busy shooting lapwings to notice his name was on the list. He appears to have no credibility just a series of controversial opinions that have little or no evidence to back them up. To be given a CBE makes a mockery of the whole honours system, he hardly has a command of the British Language.

A quick look down the list of people who are members of the committee that recommend who should receive honours tells us all we need to know.

We find for example Dame Glynis Breakwell, ex vice chancellor of Bath university who somehow commanded a salary in excess of £400k making her one of the highest paid VC's in the country. After a campaign by the students union, she was finally replaced by somebody who can do the job for £200k pa less than she could do it.

Rotten to the very top IMO.

.....and I expect Winston, at the time, probably muttered "for goodness sake get over yourself man "

Its interesting what Sir Billy Connolly says about the subject,......well its interesting in a simple common sense way

He's so stupid stating his intentions. I have been told you get limited access and it's all programmed to the second anyway, in his case read nano second now in the light of his comments

Maybe the Royals have to draw short straws. If HM The Queen can stomach and face off meeting the Late Martin McGuiness, I don't expect this Tweeter will hold any fear for her
