Claydon hoe

Claydon were promoting the use of a hoe at the midlands machinery show. The theory being it would contribute to bg control. I wonder what the opinion of Claydon users was of this theory? As a committed plough devotee it left more questions than answers in my mind.

I'm keeping an eye on it. Theres not much in terms of videos of it working yet and havent heard of anyone who's got one yet. It might be useful as part of a control strategy.

Probably fine for the gps boys.be interesting to know what percentage on here used it.id love it but could never justify it on a small acreage

Jeff was telling me it can be used without gps and he did so last spring driving himself

Pretty big reduction in BG. according to work they did with Agrii

Without glyphosate I guess there will be little alternative for black grass ?

No-one will have one (well used one yet) as I understood it, only one was the prototype which was being demonstrated on Claydon's own farm. Hoeing is a very useful tool but can break residual herbicide layers and encourage further flushes of weeds (in beet for example).

I wonder if band sowing is the way to go if mechanical weeding is a future must. Narrow widely spaced rows allow for a greater proportion of the weeds to be uprooted?

We tried a carre hoe last spring on claydon drilling, it did help a bit it needs fairly dry condtions for it to work at it's best we felt.
Isn't gonna be the long term answer to glyphosphate ban

Haven't read or seen much about it, but in my head it seems a good idea? Would one downside from a sales point of view be that you need rtk?

You don't need RTK. The rest of us have managed for decades in crops like sugar beet without though a wonky line is harder to follow accurately. The Garford hoe I used to use in beet was never any good at pulling tillered black grass out but Jeff's prototype I saw at Cereals seemed fairly well thought out for doing just this.

I won't be trying one because my slopes mean the drill crabs & the hoe would take half the rows out!

Friend hoed with a Garford front mount last year, at flag leaf.
It took out pretty much all the BG in between the rows, but there was still plenty in the rows to keep the seed bank up.
In his spring wheat he used an einbock weeder, in both directions across the field, then hoed. Pretty much bg free, which was impressive on some bad bg land.

I tried a garford hoe last year and while the headstock and camera sensing was amazing couple days with the rtk in my tractor I could go 16k. However the actual weeding tines aren't strong enough for dry clay and didn't take enough weeds out
