Climate report backs UK produce

Some potential support for us so worth reading? This report calls for stopping all food imports not transported by train, sourcing food locally and reducing food processing. It does push for a 50% reduction in beef and lamb consumption, however if imports are massively reduced as the report suggests this could be workable for us as we would need to be highly self sufficient in food?

The gist of the report is we cannot rely on as yet undeveloped technology to save us as it won't be ready in time to prevent damaging climate change. Although not specifically mentioned this obviously rules out feeding everyone fermented protein slime brewed in vats any time soon, so another positive for us.

And now a quick whinge regarding our good friend Mr Harrabin's BBC article on the report... Naturally he highlights the red meat reduction, but fails to balance that with the recommendation to reduce food imports and source locally .
Amusingly he has a photo of a power station captioned "Emissions from power stations could be captured at source", followed by the contradictory introduction "...Technologies such as carbon capture... cannot be relied on to help the UK meet its climate change targets". Quality work!

Without bothering to read such a report, I would start by raising an immediate flaw. It is more energy efficient to import grain from S America by ship than haul it up from France by train.
while it may be the average farmers wet dream, that all imports happen by train, hell will freeze first.

Yes the report is pretty poor, although the dubious quality of reports never worries the anti farmer movement so why shouldn't we use the bits that suit us! I agree with the key point which is technology won't be enough to allow business to carry on as usual. Problem is why does it not only get BBC coverage but also they pick and choose so heavily to suit their agenda? Very annoying

How do you think it got to the boat in the first place ?

It’s the destruction of the rainforest and grain fed beef that’s a big part of the problem. If we move to grass fed beef only then I could see a situation where local grass fed beef prices rise.

Yes because global average figures are used for beef and lamb environmental footprints making UK produce appear far worse than it is. How many thousands of litres of water do they quote for lamb? Outdoor at this time of year they drink NOTHING out the trough! Rest of the time our water comes from springs, yet we are averaged against some semi desert feed lot pumping aquifers dry
