We were cutting winter Barley Friday the air temp got up to 31°c, we were chopping and the field was a bit hilly.
Our 420 Tucano engine temp on the hills rose to 97°c while downhill it dropped to around 90°, according to the screen it wasn’t working that hard .
My question is how hot is too hot, we have only done 20 hours cutting this year and the radiator is as clean as it gets being the start of the season!

Engine running temperatures are usually between 90-105 degrees C so 97 is about mid range.
This is why the radiator is pressurised, for every 1psi of pressure the coolant can be heated 1 degree over its boiling point.

Those running temps are purely for emissions reasons not engine longevity.

Can be altered in the ecu software.

Timbo, can you explain to me why an engine running hotter is beneficial for emissions, or do you mean, the emissions controls are the reason it is running hotter as a side effect (i.e. it is consuming some of it's own exhaust gases and so not losing heat as readily to exhaust)? Thanks.

I only ask as my buddy had a few JDs over the years and one of the first things he did was to get the Derv Doctor chappie to come and do away with the emissions stuff and he reckoned the engines ran cooler and used less juice on lighter work as a result?
