Converting a 20ft container into a spray store

Where do I find guidance on what needs doing to it and who needs to be informed about it? See attached which is all I could find.

I've just bought a second hand single trip 20 foot container as a spare spray shed. Mostly it will be used for whole pallet deliveries of sprays & slug pellets. I might even set up the IBCs I use for manganese and magnesium in there. I already have a fully bunded & insulated container next door as my existing store but at times it's simply not big enough. I need somwhere to be able to load full pallets in or as an overflow.

I will seal the floor and fit a lip to create a bund for 110% of the contents. I'd rather keep it level than tip it back as the door doesn't look like it is fully weatherproof.

I'd like to get it sorted by the time my ACCS inspection happens in March. I thought I'd ask the TFF Collective before ringing the Environment Agency.

When we built our spray shed I think the chap who looked at it was from catchment sensitive farming. It all complied but we were 12 miles outside the right river basin so I didnt get a penny!

Massive overkill for 300ac, but I got the frame dead cheap as it was a cancelled order, got a mate in when he was short of work, mixed our own concrete and built it ourselves on a shoestring. New sheds are always worthwhile!

The floor is sloped as a bund which goes into a catch tank.

Yes I know it needs a tidy up!

@Brisel - It won't need to be up to BASIS store standards. The guidance is HSE AIS 16 for farm stores (I'm assuming your not planning to start selling! and it just a farm store) I've attached it together with the 'Yellow Code' which is the standard for distributors stores. I don't think you need to inform anyone, but the EA are always willing to offer advice, especially in terms of location.

Hope this helps

on a container store you have covered it above really with sealed floor and bunded entrance

Dont forget warning signs, spill kit, fire extinguishers (correct type and in date), locks and some sort of air extraction

lights ventilation and segregation of wet and dry products were issues when I used a container as a spray store, not difficult to sort but were mentioned on audits. floor sealing will be a major job on a wood floored container.

Thank you. This is really useful.

I tagged you all because you either are involved in the training or have built your own stores recently.

I was worried about the floor. I thought a good chemical resistant sealant paint would do the job. Sliding pallets in will knacker it! I might look for a second hand pallet truck to live in there permanently.

Are pallets stored sufficient to keep wet & dry products apart? I've been ok with this in the past. My main store has racking so that's been no problem. This one will have IBCs and slug pellets in at certain times of year. Legaly disposng of liquid contaminated pallets is what usually makes the inspector suck air through his teeth! Luckily I've never had this issue.

It will be alongside the current store - there will be questions asked by the RT inspector. It's hardly very expensive for a small bund lip & few cans of Polycote for the floor! The biggest expense was the £1500 for the container itself. I'm not going to bother insulating it against frost as the other one is up to full spec.

does the bund have to be fire proof? Im not sure but it would make sense.
my store is very close to a river so I scrapped the container idea and bought an expanda chem from mickmoor, . probably not big enough for your needs, but very good.

That's not a bad solution but my 20ft container was £1500 so I can afford to spend a bit on it & still be better off.

ideally move door to side/middle of container, that opens things up, light and access wise., it would take a good few hours with the grinder though.

How much would a fireproof floor bund cost?

from ais16.pdf
Check where any contaminated fire-fighting water will drain and:
do not site stores near to drains, watercourses, n wells and boreholes or areas liable to flooding.

The store, including any doors but not the roof, ■■should be made of materials which will resist fire for 30 minutes or longer.

I will see if I can find you any pictures, but did exactly this a few years ago. Needed a new store anyway so did my basis project on it then built it the following year. We found the best way to ensure it was watertight was to remove the wooden floor, weld 3mm steel plate under the very bottom, then add a box section frame topped with galvanised catwalk to bring the floor back to the original level. Plenty of capacity and no bund to trip over. 50 mm celotex on walls and ceiling, lights and heater with thermostat, high and low level ventilation. Don’t forget spill kit, sand bucket and eye wash. Should cover most eventualities.

surely if you have a spray store already you know what is needed to meet the rules n regs so just set your new 1 up the same and when your next inspection is due it will get checked and added to their records
