Planted wheat in to the oat cover had to wait 3 extra days compared to bare stubble finished today just need to spray it off before the wheat is up

In any other year we would have had to drill it before the first heavy rain in October
Ragdale hanslope soil on the heavy side
Can't believe the regrowth on our last oat crop. Just spraying it off to plant wheat into it.

Some of our oats has Flag leaf out
Will get some pics when near there again have on field with 10 acres left as cover for spring barley

Oats planted in early August have grown well in some fields
Where we had a straw fire the ground dried out without stubble and the oats struggled to emerge the ground is much harder and drier there
Looking at the burn result I would not want to return to straw burning as it would starve the worms and leave the soil bare
cover crops would be much harder to establish in dry autumns

With using oats as a cover between autumn cereal crops fruit fly is a concern found some dead hearts on wheat planted after combined oats
Only the odd plant

I think there was a trial into blackgrass populations after burning. They recon it actually helped the black grass as it germinated from deeper.

I was as surprised as you when I saw it. i suppose lots of things have also changed since burning was banned. A switch too min till, loss of a lot of chemicals, shorter crops ect.
We did min till when we burnt
We got resistance to ipu and fusillade I the late 80s burning ban resulted in a return to ploughing and the loss of organic matter through oxidation
If we had used the notill drill then our soil would now be much easier to manage

On Thursday 26th September, we’re holding a webinar for farmers to go through the guidance, actions and detail for the expanded Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) offer. This was planned for end of May, but had to be delayed due to the general election. We apologise about that.

Farming and Countryside Programme Director, Janet Hughes will be joined by policy leads working on SFI, and colleagues from the Rural Payment Agency and Catchment Sensitive Farming.

This webinar will be...
