Creep feeding lambs

Hi all,

Got about 200 lambs left for fattening, we've been giving creep feed from mole valley, is there anything cheaper better that I could use? Maybe barley?
Thanks again

We're feeding whole oats this year. We have plenty of grass so I thought something cheaper would suffice. Trouble is they've been very slow to start eating it. Cost just under £130/ton delivered for a 18ton load.

Sell them as stores.
The first loss is always the best loss!!!!!

Not necessarily, every farm's situation is different. Store lamb trade is poor & cereals are for nothing (OK, not if you're paying £130/t:eek:. I'd happily fill a trailer with barley at £120/t;)), so perhaps there is a place for feeding cheap cereals on farm, rather than taking the hit on store prices?

Ive had oats out in a feeder for about a month and very little was taken. Had a bit of lamb creep left over from spring time and mixed it 50:50 and thats got them interested now. Back on now to just oats and lambs really gaining weight now.

Defiantly a place for feeding cereals, especially on farms that are already growing the grain.

yep barley would be ok.plenty of energy but the prob. -short on protein. Should be palatable but if they are slow to start on it thats just as well from a safety point of view.

Barley ok if they have the frame but lack finish but if you have to grow them onto a decent weight they will grow slowly at this end of the year without added protein.
Price of soya and grains concentrate really should be a hell of a lot cheaper.. do people know that soya has fallen from £340 down to £255? Grains under £100 quid of the combine.. concs made up with soya not rape should be around £160 add to this the pressure of pea and bean prices. See what it is come febuary.

Thanks for all your replies, I'll be buying in the barley. I'll mix it with some creep to get them going on it and go from there I think. Thanks again

What are you feeding alongside it? If you have plenty of lush grass, that will be low in energy and high in protein at this time of year, so a cereal would balance it well (that's where the 3 in 1 feeders work well). If the grass has all gone and they are shut up with hay or silage as a forage, then cereals alone would be woefully low in protein and a higher protein blend would be well worth the extra money (or sell as stores for someone else to take the punt). I'd certainly be thinking hard if I was buying in all the feed, with lamb prices where they are.
