20% we'd propcorn at that!We crimp in the mid 20%'s, maybe even 20%. Very often bale straw within couple of days. Crimp keeps fine
Down at that needing more crimp additive. Is there not other preservatives with better feed value?

Explain please.I prefered to go drier and stick the water hose in the mill
No it's notIt must be easier on the combine too to be cutting it a bit nearer to the drier end of the job.
The ideal time to harvest is at 30% DM , this is not always possible , weather problems ectExplain please.
Wetter is easier on the machineNo it's not
any i cut the combine was groaning at the slights of lumps and the unloading belt didnt like much more than a third in the tankWetter is easier on the machine
I used to put two empty drums above unloading auger outlet to make a void to stop the grain bridging and causing belt slippage when starting up to unload.any i cut the combine was groaning at the slights of lumps and the unloading belt didnt like much more than a third in the tank
I used to run the trailers along side , with the chaff going in as well it ditnt take long to load ,any i cut the combine was groaning at the slights of lumps and the unloading belt didnt like much more than a third in the tank

Completely agree with the practicality benefits of this, but I thought the theory was that there were dm losses drying in the field from 30% down. There may also be a different (better?) sugar/starch balance before full senescence.Agreed, much easier on the combine and straw to harvest drier and add water. We cut ours at 16-18% last year and just had the hosepipe running full speed into the mill conveyor. Absolutely no heating issues, it’s analysed at 30%.
Makes it the best of both worlds, dead easy to combine as you can start and finish at any time of day, but the straw isn’t green so you don’t need to worry about getting that dry.
Last year we used hi-dry additive. In the past we have crimped with propcorn. Kept perfectly20% we'd propcorn at that!

Had her way too tight then.any i cut the combine was groaning at the slights of lumps and the unloading belt didnt like much more than a third in the tank
Chaff Is good feedThats a valid point- for this job sample quality is absolutely not a consideration- chuck the lot in the tank. Even some unthreaded heads in the sample aren’t a problem.
bo11ocksChaff Is good feed
Probably is but by opening up to let the chaff through I lost no grain over the back and it was a good fibre source for the bulls I was feeding on add lib , cheaper than buying straw pelletsbo11ocks
