Crimping Grain for dummies.

Explain please.
The ideal time to harvest is at 30% DM , this is not always possible , weather problems ect
If it drops below 25% then the man on the mill will add water to avoid fermentation and storage losses ,
I grew crimp for years around 300 acre wheat and barley , never had any problems harvesting or pitting , but you have to follow the simple rules , you will not find a better feed for fattening stick imo
Harvesting with an old Ne,vw Holland combine I drove myself , some say you can have problems harvesting, I have never seen any

Agreed, much easier on the combine and straw to harvest drier and add water. We cut ours at 16-18% last year and just had the hosepipe running full speed into the mill conveyor. Absolutely no heating issues, it’s analysed at 30%.

Makes it the best of both worlds, dead easy to combine as you can start and finish at any time of day, but the straw isn’t green so you don’t need to worry about getting that dry.

we have crimped maize, brilliant feed, 'stuff' bought through kelvin kave, they were most helpful, checking the crop, and telling us, ideal stage. no vermin problems.
We have w wheat, 18 acres, which looks like a serious amount of grain, and straw, straws waist high, you can only see the head, of a couple roe deer, that are in there, no body.
Options are, crimp or dry/roll, still undecided, there's a local contractor fully geared up for crimping, so no problem there. To cut, when ripe, one has to find someone to combine it, not so easy, when everyone is mid harvest, friend has an old combine, that may, or may not, last, to cut our corn ! Certainly crimping opens up home produced corn, as an option for many farmers.

I used to run the trailers along side , with the chaff going in as well it ditnt take long to load ,

Thats a valid point- for this job sample quality is absolutely not a consideration- chuck the lot in the tank. Even some unthreaded heads in the sample aren’t a problem.

Completely agree with the practicality benefits of this, but I thought the theory was that there were dm losses drying in the field from 30% down. There may also be a different (better?) sugar/starch balance before full senescence.

We wholecrop our spring barley it's v v v easy - contractor comes in does it in 3 hours, 6/7 acres of grass on top, sheet on job done. You also get alot of bulk with the straw included to. We feed it to store cattle 400ish kg to sell as 500+kg store cattle. I've never had anything to do with crimped to be honest but for those who have would you say it's a better feed than wholecroping it.....?

any i cut the combine was groaning at the slights of lumps and the unloading belt didnt like much more than a third in the tank
Had her way too tight then.

Basically similar to beans -
concave 2/3 open
800rpm
Bottom sieve wide open
Fan flat out
Top sieve approx 1/2 open.

Unloading- yes on move and not too full else itll hold together & nothing comes out
