If it was up to the do Gooder's no hedgecutting would done at all, then they would moan it's scratching there car!
A hedgecut annually provides more cover for nesting birds and the berries grow behind the cutting line supplying lots of grub.
Cutting bianually only provides berries biannually and lets the hedge grow sparse reducing the cover.
Whoever made up these rules are complete niconpoops

If anyone pipes up just say it's not in any scheme or claiming payments so you can do whatever, they soon shut up then. I keep telling people the situation doesn't just miraculously change because the date has, a fair bit of discretion is involved, i.e. checking the hedge row for any nesting activity, in the interests of safety, convenience, etc.

The elec board here cut all year round, I questioned them over this as they did a hedge with some lines above it. They said there was no nesting birds but to be fair I think they just do as they please. I won't be signing any paperwork next time for them to come on the place.
My contractor has this exact quandary, a chap in the village who has 8-10 acres wanted his hedge cut, I explained deadline looming but he wanted to remove a wire fence before it was cut. Anyway it hasn't been cut yet and as far as I am aware he doesn't claim an area payments on the field so the contractor is just going to cut it.

Sounds like a bit of a crock to this fella. So you can cut a hedge and claim a sub, so long as you check there's no nests/eggs that are going to be mulched? I don't suppose you can move it, cut it, put it back like if you were allowed initiative?
It's not like mum won't come back to it? Or is it the hedgehuggers just don't like farmers, and vant to make you pay?

What's the exact legislation on cutting roadside hedges as im hearing conflicting reports, thanks.

Don't know the exact legislation but; junctions, narrow roads, private hedges, in the interests of safety, etc, are a go. We do about a weeks worth in the summer. Some of which get ordered by the council if it's not done.

In my dim and distant past I did contract tree cutting for Seeboard, when anyone refused to allow us to cut they were put on a list to ensure they didn't receive any emergency service if there was a problem with their supply. One farm had regular power cuts whenever anyone from Seeboard was working in the area even when not on that particular line. A number of farms we cut where done under a Court Order.
