Just finished final PD session and have 5 empty out of 171, but what I seem to be getting a lot of cows showing signs of bulling but are PD+, normally get a couple but this year seem to be about 20 odd, vet just puts it down to our good cow fertility, but heavily pregnant cows jumping about like idiots and fighting increases the risk of something going wrong, does anyone else have this problem?

I can't remember the exact stats but it's something like 60% of cows at gestation length 5/6 month will show some sign of bulling, to do with the hormone changes as pregnancy develops.
Bull wouldn't bother with them.

Seems to be the same cows and is a 21 day cycle and have had them do it up to the point of calving, thought is must be hormones, but is it better the fertility the greater chance of it happening?

When our holsteins improved fertility we got less.

4% displaying heat while pregnant is the figure given.

How early were they preg tested. Is it possible they have aborted.

Could also be diet related.

Strugle to see a holstien bull when shes mt so she wont when shes pd+ve

Need better Holsteins then. Guys here with all US Holstein genetics achieving around 60% conception rates, some getting over 70%. The LIC kiwi guy up the road can’t even get over 70% preg with 9 weeks breeding and way lower production.

Do you have a lot of clover sidjon? Think the oestrogen can make them do it. On an AI course this week, instructor told us that serving an already pregnant cow, will cause her to abort in 50% of cases. Though he said the further in calf they are, the less risk there is. We get them too, had one pd + by the vet last week, she had been served 4 times after this date. Instructor recommended doing a milk progesterone test on bulling cows you think might be pregnant, just looked the kits up and it's only 35 quid for a 10 cow kit

All PD+ 5 to months and was done by myself , cycling cows were done twice just in case there was a abortion problems.

High clover silage, but no red clover this winter, am thinking this could be diet, cows are in good nick and silage is rocket fuel ( even though I aiming for good dry cow feed), just hope they settle down in a bit.

On Thursday 26th September, we’re holding a webinar for farmers to go through the guidance, actions and detail for the expanded Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) offer. This was planned for end of May, but had to be delayed due to the general election. We apologise about that.

Farming and Countryside Programme Director, Janet Hughes will be joined by policy leads working on SFI, and colleagues from the Rural Payment Agency and Catchment Sensitive Farming.
