Cyclist, another close call today

Came in behind 2 cyclists going up a hill. Had the tractor and 4 furrow plough on, they were doing about 15mph and couldnt get past. There was a lorry right on my tail followed by numerous cars.

Turned a corner at the top of the hill and went for the overtake going down hill now. Of course as always they sped up! Peddling for all they were worth. I was barely able to get back on to my side of the road in time for on coming traffic. Basically had to barge in just ahead of them. The alternative was to abandon the overtake but i had an artic lorry right on my tail.

What are these people trying to prove? Who is going to be the worst of in a collision, do they really think they have a chance or are they willing to risk there life to prove a point?

And who is in the right here? They sped up dramatically from when i started to overtake.

They then followed me for a mile down a slight hill holding everyone else up.

So you could not overtake going up the hill, and relied on the tractor overspeeding to get past as you went down the hill. Perhaps you should look at your driving style before you kill a fellow road user and go straight to jail!
We all have a right to be on the road.

What a cock end reply.
Cyclists are a menace when your in a tractor.
If the tractor doesn't overtake he gets done for the line of traffic behind him

Hardly a surprise bicycles go faster downhill than up, is it?

Always the responsibility of the overtaker to overtake safely. Backing out of an overtake is better than completing n unsafe overtake.

I shouldn't have thought the cyclists were trying to prove anything any more than you were trying to prove anything. What were you trying to prove?

As you said, they'd come off worse in a collision. Do you want that on your conscience? Or is it probably better all round to accept that while they may not have been overly courteous, it's not the end of the world to wait a bit? Just think, if you'd pulled over somewhere safe to let the traffic past, you would've had time to post a justifiably righteous rant about cyclists holding the whole job up!

Slowing up to turn into the farm with a trailer load of bales and two cyclists who i had passed earlier decided to split up and while one overtook me the other undertook me so at one point we had two cyclists, a tractor and an oncoming car all on the same width of road! Madness. To top it all later i had a car overtake me while a chap and his 7-10yr old son on there bikes were coming in the other direction and the father was shouting abuse at me! wtf had i done?!

Roadcraft - an essential read. You may have been frustrated but surely you expect children to rush between parked cars, folks to open car doors in residential streets, horses to spook or shy and cyclists to ride faster downhill?

You were 100% in the wrong!

You didn't have the speed to pass them up the hill

You didn't have the speed to pass them down the hill.

If there had been an accident you would have been to blame!

You should only ever attempt to overtake when its safe to do so and have the speed advantage to do so and in this case you didn't have the speed advantage!

And I say the above as someone who detests cyclists on the roads!

Hmm, few people jumping to conclusions. Couldnt overtake going up hill due to on coming traffic and blind bend. Once i turned the corner there was plenty room to overtake given they were doing 15mph at the time.

And where did i say i over spend the tractor? Its limited to 2000rpm in top gear and i run it at that on the road at all times.

If they increase their speed as im trying to pass to keep me out how am i to blame?

If you were in a car and your loved ones died in a head on with an artic doing what you did, what would you say of the matter?

I had the speed going up the hill but there was on coming traffic.

When i started my overtake we were doing 15mph. I can do over 25. I was ahead of them but they were following at the end of the plough going as hard as they could.

I thought it was the responsibility of road users to allow vehicles to overtake safely?

What you are saying is next time im in thr car and someone overtakes me i can speed up and keep them out and force them into a head on collision or pull back risking a collision with the vehicle behind?

I have put this on before, same thing happened to me but I was in a truck and it was was more like 20 cyclists. Followed them for ages and went to overtake just as they started going downhill and they spread out.

I was basically held on the wrong side of the road for an uncomfortably long time. In my mind no one should speed up when they are being overtaken but not sure where the blame would be in the case of an accident.

Don’t get me wrong, I hate cyclists with a passion.

Most of them are a pain in the arse esp especially with the horrid attire they choose to wear.

If I could I’d run them all down but you are in the wrong from what you have said. If you can’t overtake (plough makes it even harder) then don’t try, I’d have hung back and let some other silly sod try it first. Yes they should have pulled over but they don’t like doing that.

The only way to pass is on a very long straight but even then you have to watch for cocky drivers 8 cars back trying to have you all in one go

Cyclists have every right to be there, But I would be in favour of them carrying some kind of insurance in order to use the road legally. They need to be accountable because they are not always in the right, at the minute they can cause an accident and technically ride away. Some kind of registration and insurance just like everyone else, horses too, I wouldn't move livestock across a road without at least public liability.
In this case however I would have sat behind them no matter what was behind me. It was obvious that they would speed up on the downhill and been out of your way.
I have stayed behind cyclists doing 5mph on blind corners, even when they wave you past, I would still sit until I had a clear view myself, they really hate it, but if something comes round that corner and I'm on the wrong side of the road and there's a collision I will be in deep trouble and the cyclist will not.
