£5m plus for Sewborrwens and £1.7m for Low beckside and there is still the campus to go at, not sure what they paid for it (not a lot I don’t think) but Askham Bryan must stand to make a good few million on the deal.

Sad job really.
There is no way the right team cannot make that place pay, but when you see the salaries these FE academics pay themselves it’s no wonder. There was a time when teachers/ lecturers didn’t get the biggest salaries but had a lot of time off, now they want both.
I can see why school kids need 12 weeks off but not lecturers......all the students are working age ffs, a lot of these 3 year courses could be done in 2 and save students a fortune in accommodation

Arla contract for the milk, whats gone wrong up there ?
I think the issue is with how Further Education is structured rather than Dairying or Agriculture. Not enough revenue for the cost of a student place I would think. And perhaps some shifty management, which seems to have followed Newton Rigg like a bad smell for over 20 years.

Very sad I would say, would there be any other land based ag colleges in the area

Newton rigg has been struggling for funding for more than 30 years, and so have a lot of similar sized ag colleges. Ag doesn’t do well on FE funding courses cost too much to run properly and not enough bums on seats. Askham has closed most of the old local day release centres, because of the funding gap and merged with other none ag colleges to try and bring costs down. I suspect now they make more of their income from courses such as dog grooming etc. Plus they do have some courses that qualify for HE funding.

Intake of ag students at newton rigg during Arkham Bryan’s tenure went from 12 to around 200, I don’t think bums on seats was the issue, as I understand FE is struggling whatever the vocation.

It’s on there somewhere - not much detail if your into hill farming though
Looking at that you could trip over a profit. Doesn’t sit right.
Great unit of your into housed cows, will have made plenty profit but it’s the loss making FE college it’s attached to that’s the issue. I think the unit is kitted out to cope with 500 cows but not sure, I’ve watched them milking a fair few times and from an amateurs perspective it seems very impressive- cows were so quiet and content.

Low Beckside the hill farm is with Savills with a price tag of £1.725.000.

As an ex Newton Rigg student i see the sale of Newton Rigg to be shameful and a travesty . I remember in the 90s when i was a Rigger there , we whipped Askham Bryant at everything.
Askham Bryant are stripping the assets bare and filling there own pockets. Crooks the lot of them.

History repeating itself, similar happened to Seale Hayne when Plymouth Poly took it over.

Same happened at Kirkley Hall, another college took over, sold farms off, shadow of its former self.
Did Askham Bryant not take over Kirkley Hall and sell some of the assets off straight away? They seem to be a rum bunch who will sell off the spoils at any given chance.

I was well left by then but no, I think it was a fairly local polytechnic. Main farm Broadlaw was sold off if I recall and now it’s mainly horses and urban courses no farming at all but someone more local will know better than me.
It used to be the best sheep college in the country at one point, when Hans Porkson was running the sheep side, it had a NCA, NDA, farm secretary and various other ag courses
