When I was looking for a digger in 2014 I rang 1 particular dealer on 3 separate occasions about 3 different diggers this was over the course of 6 months or so. On the 3rd occasion I was met with “oh it’s you again this is the 3rd time you’ve rung us about a machine, your just wasting our time”. I wasn’t wasting there time I genuinely wanted to buy a digger, had 15 grand in the bank ready to buy with and just wanted a price !. It’s fair to say I didn’t buy one from them I got one from a firm in Luton, and the deal couldn’t of gone more smoothly.
I’ve since seen stuff at the other dealers I’ve been interested in but F@#k em !.

Tractors and lorries are a niche market unlike cars. Therefore the trader stands a better chance of selling the vehicle if someone rings, this allows him to go through the history and the good points of the vehicle over the phone, opposed to a simple online ad where he can not bend the truth as much, as it's in writing;)

However, as some have pointed out the telephone service is not up to spec with some dealers and is a waste of time.

I agree with this. And I understand everyone's concerns with not listing a price. When I was selling, the reason I liked not listing the price, Is it allowed us to hear the comments about the price. As to whether our price was in the ballpark? Or way off? Sometimes we'd guess as to the value incorrectly. Valuing used equipment is a educated guess at best. And this would help us figure that out. VS, an ad with a price that may be not where it should be? And no one calls. And we don't know why. And edit to add, I have no idea why they don't call you back? That was unacceptable to me.

Why the machinery trade do what they do is a mystery to me

Trading in a car is one thing, but farmers being farmers will be incensed if they only got 20K as a trade in and suddenly it's in the yard for 23K.

Why?

Do farmers not expect a Machinery dealer to turn a profit??

Out of that £3k he has maybe had to do a small repair, definitely a service and replace a few bits and give some sort of warranty

£3k is the bare bones to leave a margin for his efforts, because he'll maybe only see £1k when he's had a haggle with the Used trade-in purchaser

This isn't the first thread about this and I figured there are more people that hate POA.
In that thought I just throw an email asking the price, no company details, just my name and politely asking for the price. More then once I have been pleasently surprised and bought things.
I hate it just as much as the next guy but hey, use that to your advantage.

It's to protect themselves from the guy who traded it in. We have had this thread before.

If you are serious about buying it you are surely enough of a big boy to ring and ask for a price?
Lame excuse. All manner of stuff is traded-in one way or another, but this POA thing is pretty unique to tractors and plant, though you do occasionally see it with property.

CBAitis is prevalent in many industries. POA has nothing to do with it. Lot of people in jobs they should not be in too, talking to anyone on the phone like that is wrong. I admit I never expect to get on with 100 percent of people but you still have to pretend you will.

It's frustrating but it's far from just dealers doing it. Plenty of private sellers do it. I recon a lot do on facebook etc just to get a feel for the demand for the item. If 20 people want to know the price I recon they ad a bit on.
