Debut next to Maize

Debut is an SU and you can put SU’s on Maize such as Maister so in basic principal I would suggest you would get away with a bit of drift. @ollie989898 @Woodlander would you agree?

They are indeed related but not as closely as that. You cant use Ally on maize AFAIK for example.

I would be very careful to avoid drift in any neighbouring crop.

I dont know if debut will do maize in or not but I would assume it will.

Debut is an su just like ally etc but put ally on beet and you'll kill them stone dead.
Nicosulfuron is used on maize and although a cousin of debut I wouldn't let debut anywhere near the maize same as I wouldn't let drift of ally onto beet. I'd also all clear between when changing between su's different crops.

In fact, I do recall a few seasons ago someone had beet next to some of our maize and drift of some form knocked the first couple of rows of maize back from the hedgerow. Not sure if it was a debut they were using or not but was fairly late in the crops growth so I would think it migh have been. Maybe best to wait for less wind....

Ive known geaminicides to completely fudge a crop of maize, luckily it was a small area alongside some potatoes.

Ive also known a beet crop completely frazzled by maize herbicides. Every plant in the field dead as a post.

Sorry I can't really add a lot to what has already been mentioned. There are SU herbicides available for a wide range of both cereal and broad leaved crops, (sugar beet, potatoes, linseed, OSR (in other countries)) but all have a very different degree of selectivity, some are active against broad leaved weeds, some grass weeds as well.

I have no information on the susceptibility of maize to Debut, the only time I have advised on beet (fodder beet) next to a maize crop, we didn't use Debut in the herbicide program. The Debut label is quite clear about avoiding drift onto neighbouring crops, so to be safe, I would take care not to allow drift onto the neighbouring crop. Is there a hedge between the crops or are they drilled right next to each other. Could you take measures to reduce drift next to the maize? Go slower, slightly coarser spray (may not be ideal for weed control if the weeds are small targets,) spray early/late when wind speeds are lower (better for beet safety anyway.) etc. It looks like the OP may get an opportunity this weekend. Their location is 'the midlands,' my forecasts are showing light rain moving through followed by light winds for the next couple of days, (albeit assuming you can find a window away from the small risk of isolated showers!)
