Disc harrows

Hi ,

Does anyone have any experience of using these short disc harrows for reseeding work. Working down ploughed land do they consolidate better than a power Harrow . Also discoing up old grassland what job do they make ? Have a John Deere 6230 and a 6310 to pull one with. Which of those disc harrows would work best . Many thanks

With grass stubbles you may have issues going straight in as the tend to leave ropes of stubble which are hard to break down and sit on top so can be a pain for drilling. The best solution to this is to drive fast so you'll need plenty of power. A power harrow will probably leave a leveler finish as well imo

I did a field that way last year and ran the power harrow over it before seeding it with the combi air drill. The power harrow seemed to shake out any remaining bits of sod. The problem with the short disks seems to be having a big enough tractor to lift them rather than pulling them.

We hired our contractor with a set of discs; one of the new fancy ones!!
To till up old ley for a reseed. Never again. Couldn’t use anything tined or land leveler ; as too much scraw. I tried. Had to use a powerharrow; 3 runs, and still not level.

Depends on how open the bottom of the grass is I've done two fields of Italian ryegrass where you could see plenty of bare soil and two passes is perfect. Another old "carpet" sward,I stopped after 100yards because it was embarrassing how bad it was. Worked one ploughed carpet ley and had it working too deep and it pulled a lot of clods back up but might have been my fault. Going to attack some ryegrass this week

I use a 3 mt mounted disc for all our reseeding work , two light runs of the disc and the a light run of the power Harrow with a grass seeder on it , works brilliant , but it does need to be at least two weeks sprayed off and the less grass on it the better.

Spray off ,disc ,leave ,disc , let weather soften, disc at angles every pass ,soon breaks down .

This seems the best policy as it reduces the leather jacket population, or seems to at least!

I would apply dung after the first discing as you aren’t realistically going to pull decent discs with all that dung on top.

A lot of 3m machines will be 1600kg and over and the weight is a long way back. You might need a lighter model with your tractors, unless you've got a fair bit of weight up front
