Discovery Td5 keeps stalling

As per the title - engine keeps stalling, but if I turn the ignition off and then on again, leave for 10 seconds or so while the fuel pump primes it, then it will restart.

Sometimes the engine management light comes on, sometimes it doesn't.

My first thought was the fuel pump is dying, but then I made the mistake of reading a Landrover Forum and it appears it could be anything from cam sensor, throttle position sensor, oil in loom or of course the pump.

Any suggestions?

After it has stalled, and you have the ignition back non again, Can you hear the electric fuel lift pump in the tank whining or changing tune as it gets bubbles of air through it with the fuel?
If it is, you quite possably need new copper washers under the injectors.
My defender did this. It only costs a few pounds to fix and a couple of hours time max.

Yes, it's drivable. Might do 100 yards, might do 5 miles. Seems less likely to cut out if I don't boot it too much.
Once it has restarted it's Ok again for a while.

Yes those forums are the devils work ...............

Fuel filter, I know, I know I offended you now, but just asking? I'd even blow back into the tank afraid a previous owner filled from a dirty tank? Be looking for air getting in somewhere while looking at the lines under the bonnet or a blockage. Give the wiring loom a good "wiggle" to see if you have any bad connections?

Then, we'll start to stress about the more difficult stuff/expensive stuff, when we have full diesel supply to the engine at all times?

Oil in Injector wiring loom? But they tend to run rough, not stall.
Bad connection in multiplug on foot throttle potentiomenter? Find a double jointed dwarf to look under the footwell and wobble the plug with the engine running. Believe me, I've done it and I'm 6'2", I was on the hard shoulder of the A1!

Injector seals would usually prevent starting as would the crank position sensor so I don't think it would be those.

If the diesel in the pipes/tank is black and grungy it would be the copper injector seals letting carbon back in the return. This in turn stuffs the filter/pump.

Perhaps get it plugged in and clear the codes and see which codes come back?

Air flow meter? My 110 sometimes won't set off without stalling till I put full throttle on and it clears itself I know its the airflow meter as take wires off and run without and it runs fine just uses more fuel yours could be proper buggered mines just now and then in start up

Sounds more like the fuel quality sensor. Right hand side of the block, at the rear. Right little sh!t to get to. Does the Disco leak diesel?

Does it idle rough? That is Timmy telltale for your injector seals (copper washers).

If the pump is quiet it should be OK. When they are getting tired they sound more and more like a couple of cats fighting in a bag.

Clean you MAF and MAP sensors. The one on the air pipe and the one in the inlet manifold - both will probably be covered in gunk. Do it cold, though - if they are hot when you start squirting brake cleaner at them the thin wires inside will break.

Best idea, though, us to stop buying 20 sh!t cars per year and just get one decent one! :D
Might even clean up the TFF classifieds a bit, too... Ha.

Let us know how you get on.

Yes, the fuel supply is ok. I even put a new filter on today just in case!

I think it's losing pressure on the fuel rail somewhere, as when it stops I have to turn the ignition off and on again, then press the throttle 8 times (this makes the fuel pump run for 3 minutes) and wait for it to re-pressurise.

Once it has pressure again it will restart and run for a bit.

does it make a difference if the fuel tank is full or nearly empty? had a td5 landy that would be hard to start if below 1/4 full, turned out the fuel filter housing had gone pourous, replaced it and was fine. (after changing pump, copper washers, wiring loom and several other things!!!! none of which made any difference)

@Thick Farmer has it brimming full the whole time, so we can rule that out straight away .................

Is there a mesh filter in the tank on the bottom of the pipe that the pump has to suck through, I'm not sure, it might be blocked and that's why it restarts but wont stay running.
