Discovery Td5 keeps stalling

Oil in injector loom usually is no electrics at all, as it floods the ECU. Could it be a clutch issue?

Not necessarily. Oil on the loom can create a short before it reaches the ECU -- as happened on my D90. The loom is not expensive, there are clear instructions on how to change it on the Internet and YouTube, and you could probably do it yourself in 30 minutes.

does it make a difference if the fuel tank is full or nearly empty? had a td5 landy that would be hard to start if below 1/4 full, turned out the fuel filter housing had gone pourous, replaced it and was fine. (after changing pump, copper washers, wiring loom and several other things!!!! none of which made any difference)

Tried that - the tank is nearly full now. (n)

@Thick Farmer has it brimming full the whole time, so we can rule that out straight away .................

Is there a mesh filter in the tank on the bottom of the pipe that the pump has to suck through, I'm not sure, it might be blocked and that's why it restarts but wont stay running.

I'll try looking for that, but judging by the amount of diesel that the pump managed to move when I changed the filter I think it is a problem nearer the engine (n)

If plugging it into my mates diagnostic machine doesn't give an answer, then I'll do this.

I had a similar problem on a Discovery 3, it was the copper washers under the injectors,Need to be very careful when changing them. cured mine after second attempt at changing the washers!!

Do bad washers not leave it making a funny noise, a bit like a blown exhaust?

Plugging it in might just point you in the right direction, if you can clear the codes and get it to stop. Read again and see what new codes appear.

Oh you do get embarrassed .............

The wife has a Merc ML270 and if an injector seal goes on it, the sound is just like a blown exhaust gasket. This thing doesn't sound like that yet.

I'm not easily embarrassed, but it does happen occasionally!

You could wipe the loom down with a clean tissue and see (a) if there's oil on it, and (b) if it makes any difference to the running.

I think the other problem I had was with the fuel pump. My local garage diagnosed that problem immediately when I'd told them the symptoms. (Quote: "We've replaced hundreds"). Changing it in a D90 is a problem but apparently less so in a Discovery as I think it can be got at by simply removing a panel.

Did it to my friends 06 defender, saw the loom short years ago in a garage, seem to remember a special gromit was added to the ecu case.

I tried nearly everything else and it made no difference, so decided to try the copper washers again before putting a match to it!!! Luckily it worked and hasn't missed a beat now for six months!

Yes, I've been there too. Don't use britpart bits. They really are shite and not worth the hassle of replacing when you find out how shite they really are. My britpart copper washers weren't in spec. Had to buy LR ones and do it again.

No, easy peasy. Cut a hole in the floor!

I can see it going in this order.

New fuel pump
New injector seals
New loom in top cover - done with seals.
New fuel pressure regulator
New filter housing - check the air valve and one way valve if fitted first.
Match.

We cured our poor starting defender with a new starter in the end. Sends a spike up the crank sensor and it won't start when the starter gets grumpy.

I wonder if you fitted an old sprayer gauge into the fuel line and see if the pressure stays between 3-4 bar as said in the link? It just might show a pressure drop?

I'm sure you have a sprayer in stock ............... ;)
