Do you keep a daily journal on paper?

I find that a "week to view" desk diary suits me best. The whole week visable when it's open. I put in all my appointments and everything else that I need to remember. The only problem is that I sometimes forget to turn the page on a Sunday, and miss something that I am supposed to do first thing Monday morning.

Just felt like it was a waste of time when I was made redundant so never carried on seriously. There is the odd insert until May 16 but nothing since. There are some great memory starters in there and I remember clearly what was happpening as I read through. Bizzarly we were looking for info on a family matter and I tracked it down to Feb 2011 with a couple of brief notes so more like an aid memoire!

Excellent habit to get into - the trouble is that you will probably end up duplicating and triplicating some of the entries which have been made elsewhere .

I always used to say that cows produced 3 things ; milk, muck & paper [emoji36]

I remember going to an evening visit to NMR at Harrogate pre computer days where all the milk yield and b/f figures were compiled by girls/women using NCR machines. I think they had the title comptometer operator [emoji848]. Now they must have got through literally tons of paper every year.

I have kept one since I started the Wild Boar business - what pig went, what I took to markets, hours of staff and pay etc. Came in useful when a worker started playing up and I could give him all the hours/pay etc. Still do it, now the sheep owner asks when did the ram go in etc, and I can tell him.
On the farm up the road, the old man there had kept a diary during WW2, and these diaries have been passed down to all the owners, which I think is a lovely idea. It showed the cows and names and when they calved etc. One entry told of how he went on his bike to Newcastle Emlyn (about 7 hilly miles) to buy some paint for the trap. When he got home he decided it was the wrong colour, so went back and changed it the same day! There was very little about the war, apart from the odd Home Guard meeting and practice on the beach in Aberporth. On the day war ended, there was just a note about the hay rick tilting! His sister was mentioned once at having gone with the church to Aberporth for the day. She told me 60 years later about that day - it was the furthest from home she ever went.

WARNING - MASSIVELY SELF-INTERESTED POST!

This is a really interesting topic - especially for us at fieldmargin - we have recently launched our web and phone apps. They have the ability to take notes - lots of our early adopters are taking notes just like this - attached to points on the map of their farm.

Would really love it if you think this would work for the cases described above - you can take notes from wherever you are - no need to remember til the evening. Easy way to share farm knowledge and tasks. We are listening to feedback and adding features as fast as we can!

Yes we do keep an A4 desk diary. Couple of words about the weather. Livestock births/deaths/services/health issues etc. Record of dates we made important phone calls. Phone no's that we might not want to keep long term. Details of the car that crashes through the hedge. Grazing paddock info. Basic med record as it is so easy just to jot down (eg cow no x 15 ml metacam) and then can do the full works with batch no in the eve or whatever. Ditto tag no's of animals sold. Fert applications at basic level. Dates of key events eg first cut silage, drilled wheat, etc. Vehicle MOT reminders 3 wks ahead of date etc etc etc.

I also highlight or tick when events transferred to the appropriate digital record (eg registering calves, off movements, meds).

What amazes me is the number of times we either have to or choose to look back at earlier years.

On Thursday 26th September, we’re holding a webinar for farmers to go through the guidance, actions and detail for the expanded Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) offer. This was planned for end of May, but had to be delayed due to the general election. We apologise about that.
