Dodgy hot water pump

My hot water pump is making noises and cutting out, I'm guessing it's dying?

Have you checked the impeller isn t sticking? If you remove the screw in middle, you can turn the impeller with a screwdriver to free it off.

Bizarrely I've had similar problem with pump, only the top floor of the house is warm! Engineer coming out tomorrow.

No haven't looked inside yet but after 4-5 false starts it starts and runs ok and seems to be working, just noisy. Will have a look when I get time.

Jut throwing this out there before you swap out the circulation pump.

Have you checked the wiring to the pump with a multimeter to see if the supply feed is phasing on/off *Ahem, only if qualified to do so that is, as it could be a result of an electrical issue from the boiler, faulty thermostat cutting in and out etc, because the pump works basically from inputs that turns the power off / on to the pump when it gets the signal to do so, so it would need to be checked out correctly before simply adding a new pump.

Also, there is a speed setting on the side of the GF Pump, have you tried it on another setting as a sanity check?

Tried it on a lower setting and it seems to start up better. But it comes on when the hot water system is turned on, @Exfarmer what's the difference between silver and gold?
There are two types of pump which look identical.
For central heating water water circulating you have red pumps
But many larger houses also have hot water circulating for feeding the taps.
for some reason these pumps painted gold are priced as if they are made of it.
We had to have at least 2 replaced , before we discovered the real problem

The gold will be brass for circulating water that comes out taps, to save any rust contamination.
Standard pumps for circulating water in radiators etc

I assume you have a trditional set up, whereby the central heating heats the water in the DHWC, then also does the heating on the other loop. Normally, the hot water is the priority circuit (but not always - depends who wired it up).

Therefore, I assume you potentially have a three port valve that diverts the water to the hot water / heating when required, thus you may be seeing an issue with the hot water thermostat that is fixed to the lower third of the Copper Hot Water Cylinder in the airing cupboard.

What temperature is your cyclinder thermostat set to - as it should be set around 60 max, and it is a bi Metalic strip inside it that can be faulty, which could be turning your pump on and off, so I would turn it up slightly, see if this works.

If it does - get yoursel a new cylinder thermostat.

What boiler do you have? Some modern boilers have the pump wired directly into them and it could be doing that because it’s in vent mode when starting up.

On a standard indirect hot water system the pump will run when hot water is on at the programmer and cylinder isn’t up to temperature. The water it is circulating isn’t the water that comes out of your hot tap.

The actual Colour of a pump isn’t always a reliable way of identifying wether it is a normal heating pump or a brass/bronze pump as used on secondary hot water return pipes.

I would test the power supply to the pump with a multimeter and see if it’s the feed that is switching on and off firstly.

On Thursday 26th September, we’re holding a webinar for farmers to go through the guidance, actions and detail for the expanded Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) offer. This was planned for end of May, but had to be delayed due to the general election. We apologise about that.

Farming and Countryside Programme Director, Janet Hughes will be joined by policy leads working on SFI, and colleagues from the Rural Payment Agency and Catchment Sensitive Farming.
