Dpf/Egr cleaning.

It looks like I will have to replace the dpf on my Audi. I've seen an advert for a firm called TerraClean. They suggest that the filters can be cleaned. What do you guys think? I wasn't aware that they could be cleaned! It's probably a load of rubbish. terraclean.co.uk

Are you sure? The DPF filter said it was clogged on my Golf ( full of ash, not just needing a regen ) however I was told that they are programmed to say that. We gave ours a full regen then told the ecu it had a new dpf filter and it’s been fine ever since.

To be fair I'm not sure. The warning light is for "emission control unit" which could be anything from dpf to a sensor. And I'm getting prepared for the worst.
Out of interest how do you perform a regen? I thought it was done by the vehicle when it needed it, and couldn't be done any other way. Oh, and it gets a real thrashing regularly. [emoji6]

Generally if you get the laptop plugged in you can force a regen though the diagnostic software.

If it's done some miles, has been regenerating periodically just fine and it's full of ash the only solution is replacement or removal for cleaning. There is no alternative.

If it's full of soot because it's not been self cleaning, then fix the sensor or engine problem.

As long as you haven’t left it too long might be worth trying this it worked for me. Get car up to running temp there drive around 15-20 minutes without EVER letting it drop blew 2000rpm.
If you look in the manual that’s what Audi says to do

This won't work once codes are already present, generally one the dash lights and codes are there it will not regen by itself, you have to perform a forced/static regen with a computer

DPF is normally self-cleaning but if something goes wrong, be that short cold drives as a rule or a mechanical issue, then it might need a forced regeneration by the dealer. Even a perfectly working DPF will eventually fill with ash from successful regenerations and will then need to be changed out for new filters. It should normally cover well over 100,000 miles before a new DPF is needed.

Trucks and larger tractors may have DPF's that can be removed from their housing and replaced by a cleaned exchange unit. This isn't the case with cars and light to medium vans, or tractors below about 150 to 200hp, depending on brand and model though.
