Draxxin Cover

Hi everyone

I know Draxxin provides extended cover but does anyone know for how many days it's actually effective?

Struggling to find this info online.

I have a young calf with a bad navel today and assumed it would still be covered from a Draxxin jag given on the 2nd Jan for respiratory issue.

Draxxin is recommended for respiratory disease and IBK but it doesn't mean it would be effective against navel infection. Different anitbiotics effective against different organisms. Navel ill often caused by E coli but don't think Draxin has any effect on E coli. Hence the importance of talking to vet about which antimicrobials best to use for different infections (I realise it was a prior and appropriate use of Draxxin in this case).

I heard that it's 10 days the same as Zactran. After 7 days I go in with another injection if needed to be on the safe side, it's very rarley needed though and not cheap!

Draxxin doesn't work that well on gram negative bacteria, I'm guessing that since your calf has developed an infection during treatment (approx 10 days) that the infection isn't sensitive to tulathromycin.

Is the navel infected or just irritated like sometimes happens, particularly with males.

If it is infected I'd use a broad spectrum bacteriacide like Pen & Strep, Noroclav or Synulox.

Draxxin can be at treatment levels for 7-10 days after injection and at therapeutic levels for up to 14 days. However I’ve found the farther out from treatment you get, the more likely it is to just be masking the symptoms without treating the actual issue.

Thanks everyone for the Draxxin info. Good point I should have been more aware that it didn't protect her navel. I've spoken to my vet and he's leaving me out Combiclav for the navel infection. It's a heifer calf and it's split. Nasty looking.

She had 3ml Betamox, 2ml of metacam and teramycin spray last night.

I don't think so? I haven't had one like this before. Calf is now 11 days old. The actual cord is bone dry. In fact no sign of seepage at all. No obvious intestine hanging out to indicate hernia.

I think this calf was born breech. She's a fairly premature twin calf. The bull calf didn't make it.

Iv never had twins before so it's been a roller-coaster learning curve.

Will the split heal? Calf is running around and otherwise appears well.
