Drift punches

Can anyone recommend a set of larger parallel drift punches that will do larger roll pins 12mm etc
I’ve a set of carolus ones ( geodore) but I’m after some non Chinese, I’ve made a few with the lathe and tried heat treating them they either snap or mushroom the same.

I think you might have to buy singles for that sort of size, 8mm seems the limit in sets.

Agriline do a set that runs up to 13mm, theyve got a little dome on the end that fits into the roll pin which helps a lot.

My set from them has been ok so far had it awhile but tbh its mainly been used it for knocking out and in, ones on a haybob to change Springs

What grade of steel have you been using? I've made a lot of punches out of 01 tool steel over the years, and have yet to break one. You do need to be pretty spot on with annealing, hardening, quenching & tempering though.

Broken haybob tines make good ones, about 9mm. Just have to engineer some sort of handle.

When we had a lot of large engineering firms in the area, e.g David Brown Tractors and Brook Motors, there were suppliers of quality tools as well, sadly no more.

Sad really we can’t get decent tools without a silly price tag incurred. I’ve looked at the facom range which is where I will best place my money I think, I’ve tried tool steel however I think the tempering is where I’ve gone slightly wrong.

Most supplied quality tools out of the back door or in sandwich boxes.

You don't get to have Rolls Royce quality with a Ford price tag, but that's just the way it goes. As to Facom, you won't go far wrong. They make pretty decent stuff, even though most of it isn't made in France any more. Got some of their ratchets knocking around at work and they're doing the job fine, which is a bit of a surprise given how some of the knuckle-draggers treat them.

Temperature is absolutely critical when it comes to annealing, hardening, and tempering of tool steels. We have high temp ovens at work for when we need to manufacturing tooling for specific jobs. Not a job that you can eyeball really, no matter what some of the old sweats say.

We would use a short 12mm bolt to get things started, that way the punch doesn't have to be top quality, to keep the rollpin travelling. But if you try and use the punch from the beginning, most just break . Hold the bolt with grips while hammering.

I have 2 facom parallel punches with the grip handles and there very good. think i got 1/2 and 5/8, DO not buy facom roll pin punches! they are rubbish, instead of a ball on the end they just have a step down with square edges, the step just breaks off, unless you are perfectly square and steady when hitting it which never happens in the every day world!
