Drought

doing 2t/ac though, he's very disappointed,

This year is very unusual, MrNoo, in that many of us have had little recent experience of drought.

Fortunately, my expectations for this year were always related to the yields we had in the similar years of 1976, 1964 and 1955 (1933 being a little before my time).

So, unsatisfactory, yes - frustrating, yes - financially stressful, yes - disappointing, no.

That is impressive. I shall look at magphos K in a different light now.

Steady on! I may have misled you there. The crop was suffering mild stress, not dead. I didn't tissue test it then (no point) or afterwards so I've no idea which bit helped it. I was sceptical before and still am but it may be worth a punt on a few tramlines if you think there's enough life to take it in. It was mixed with Talius, Adexar, CTL & straight epoxi so the disease on the untreated may have enhanced the leaf loss. I did a similar cocktail without Magphos K elsewhere & it didn't seem to yield any less, in fact it did better though it was a different variety on better soil. For £2.27/litre a couple of litres is worth a tramline trial or two.

Niab Tag have never shown consistent responses to trace elements in multi year trials. IMO here it tipped the balance in favour on this occasion.

im convinced foliar feeds are of benefit foliar p helps retarded crops in the spring and late foliar k increases bushel weights and helps green leaf retention, or at least it does/has here plus there seems to be less disease pressure, we are gradually moving to whole farm applications as have been experimenting this last 2/3 years

I agree but why does TAG not show this conclusion.

Started spring barley here (Bedfordshire)yesterday drilled early March on light land with plenty of muck. Lots of straw but only yielding about 2t/ac 15% Mc straw a bit green but at least it’s not all brackled like last year when we lost a lot of heads on the floor.

Oh no. Which road is that taken from? Often get grass fires on the Charnwood Lodge Nature Reserve up that way which are probably started deliberately.

Sister who lives at Erpingham in Norfolk has just sent a picture of a straw stack on fire, just a stubble field away from her house,. Sounds like local farmers and fire brigade have it under control.
