Drug and Alcohol testing

We have it written in to our contracts. The railway has a very strict policy on it, to the point that you can pass a roadside Breathalyzer and still fail the rail one. Any medication we take has to be notified to our employer.

We have a pre employment one, for cause one's when an incident happens (you don't have to be the one involved in the incident either just be on that site at that time), random ones by our company every 6 months or so (although you do get 24hrs notice for them), random ones on site either through intelligence or just because they feel like it, and some site require them now when you go for the site induction.

Up to now this year I've had 3, 2 for site inductions and 1 for cause one when one of the lads in the gang I was supervising went through a set of points with his machine and damaged them. Passed all 3 no problem

A failure can lead to your PTS card being withdrawn for 5 years, and that can include failing to supply a sample. One lads came back inconclusive so they asked him to retest, he refused so is banned for 5 years.

But you're informed of all the above policy before you join a railway firm, and its in your contract so no excuses really

Firstly I am not offering free samples for you to test ........

has any one on here got any experience of implementing a testing program for employees ?

random or blanket ?
frequency ?
Selection by risk /department ? (i.e a forklift driver poses a greater risk than say the bloke who sweeps the floor)

any help appreciated

Building sites have drink and drug testing policies, I myself had 4 tests in my time in building,
Some on site see it as infringement of rights but drugs are illegal and turning up to work under influence of drink is not right,

If you know someone is taking drugs then driving then just make the right phone call. Same with drink. If you turn up smelling of drink then the machine stays locked.
Plenty construction firms do random testing for drink and drugs.
If you cannot do without a drink for 10 hours a day then you have a big problem. There is always the big party or mistake when you might have to phone in sick and no pay but if you drive then no excuses. The employer will definitely carry some responsibility, certainly in liability to public and other employees.

I meant more that you can have a good night with booze on a Friday or sat and by Monday you will probably be clear.

I don’t think the same is true with drugs?

You are correct - drugs stay longer in the system, but I think the OP may have a concern with worker coming in smelling of alcohol appearing to be under the influence - which would indicate a more recent session?

Surprises me some in farming seem to turn blind eye to those driving tractors on drugs

Agreed. I was sidetracking slightly, curious as to how folk can use drugs and keep a job unless they book holiday in 2 week slots and make the most of the first Few days off!

Unfortunately - it is a bloody difficult thing to enforce into a company contract, as it is against their human rights - but then, if an employee gets hurt at work and it turns out they were under drug influence through rca - claim ensues as the company has then failed to prevent injury to an employee :banghead:

Can't bloody win in this country!!
