Academics tell us that planting trees and releasing beavers will save the world.... so because an academic has said it then it must be true....

I’ve read them all. Nowhere have I seen that. Your turn to read it or at least give us a name.

Then read them all again. They make the point repeatedly.
I don''t have to do it for you, same as you don't have to reply to my request that you back up your claim that my facts about McDonalds are inaccurate.

An “academic” says something which your in agreement with and it’s therefore true.
Farmers with their boots on the ground and heads in reality don’t necessarily agree with you, so are called muppets.
Care to reflect?

The academic wasn't commenting on practical matters. They were commenting on the validity of the OP as a social experiment.

If academics are not capable of understanding practicalities then that calls into validity to any "experiment". Does the "academic" have relevant qualifications and experience to validate that the OP was an adequate set-up for a social experiment?

A proper social experiment will take into a wide range of factors and outcomes and would require a comprehensive review of the data produced.

You do realise that this is a discussion on an Internet forum and not a piece of research intended for publication, don't you?

I've done lots of informal experiments over the years (not castrating my ram lambs to see how it affected sales, for example).

I'm not the one calling it a "social experiment" that has been "validated by an academic". I'm merely pointing out that it is a poorly done thing.

I don’t really see how it can be classed as a social experiment when you get insulted for expressing your opinion. Seems like another opportunity for someone to get on their soapbox again.
I’ve never said I’m concerned about vegans. People are free to eat what they like. I enjoy vegan food (or fruit, vegetables etc as I prefer to call it), usually accompanied with meat or dairy. I simply said my preferred choice was somewhere that gave me an option. The biggest issue isn’t peoples dietary choice but how big corporations are involved & pushing the vegan diet (usually through lies & twisted facts). Simply to line their own pockets. How is it any different than the meat industry cartels?

What I thought was quite clever about it was this:

The menu of the vegan cafe was (deliberately?) not stated, whereas everyone knows the McDonalds menu items.
This allowed lots of people to make assumptions (based on no evidence) about what might be on the menu of the vegan cafe in order to qualify their choice as, were the cafe not vegan, most people would have chosen it (as well as a whole load of interesting assumptions such as people "preaching veganism" at diners, which would be a baffling thing to do in a vegan cafe).
The vegan cafe might not have had a single highly processed meat substitute on it's menu, we have no idea.

What we do know though is that McDonalds does promote a few such food items quite heavily, and we also know that the companies developing such meat substitutes are massive processors who have the potential to supply McDonalds with all of their menu items, meat and meat substitute (see: Cargills for an example). The processors don't care if its meat or non-meat, its just a product line to them to help them dominate the market, and in so doing further drive down prices both from their suppliers and to their customers.

Yes but McDonald's is being reactive to potential demand from people who have been brainwashed by the vegan propaganda whereas the vegan cafe is part of a system promoting that propaganda, so we shouldn't support it

I have just had a quick read of what a 'social experiment' is, I stopped before disappearing down an academic wormhole but I also picked up on 'social psychology'. Yup. It had you McMuppets down to a tee.

My OP was word perfect. As said before, I don't just throw this sh!t together.
