Electric gates

Dads company do everything themselves (apart from digging and pouring cement for the base pads which are left to customers but they are provided exact drawings to work to). Found out too many times that if you subcontract out the installation or electrics, it’s done substandard and then no one is happy.
The company isn’t a “big boy” (dad plus two men in the workshop who’ve been with us for 15-20yrs) or “cowboys”, they’ve just been doing it successfully for 20yrs, which speaks a lot.
Can recommend overwrought, Clarke as very well made and genuine firm.see them regular in notts yorks area. Put a few electric supplies in to power gates for your dad a few years back.

In the middle of doing my 20 foot sliding gate. So far. Had to install underground cable for 300m cost 700 euro. I mole drained it in. That was done last year. 2 weeks ago I made the gate which is a 100x50 box iron frame which is 6 foot tall. Which I will then infill with timber. Looking at imported pine at about 150 or cedar for 400. The gate cost about 300 euro including the 2 best rollers I could get think they are 6 inch. Gate and 2 bits of box iron for stoppers cost 280 for galvanizing and 80 for tin of black paint that galvanizing place sells.
Took day to make gate.
So now I need to do the Concrete and buy the motors etc.
Seems a big variation on prices of equipment. And anyone who says you get what you pay for can you explain why I can get same make equipment posted to me from uk for nearly half the cost as same make in Ireland from there Irish distributor. Last time I asked question here on brands of opener 'came' was said to be the best.

One question is what is best way to protect yourself from power failure. Would I be better off with a 24v system that had the mains charging batteries.

20ft x 6ft infillled with timber! Will be a lot of wind load on that!

Ours is just mains powered, manually open in a powercut. Others have batteries with solar panels and mains.

Yes, security is becomming more of a problem.
I have a drive which is half a mile long, so mains power is out of the equation.
I see Spaldings do a gate kit, which is solar powered, with various accessories to future proof and add.
Anyone got one ? Any good ?
Its only night time when it needs to be closed at the moment, to stop lamping vehicles, but i suspect daytime closing will soon be required. So more kit needed to enable.
Its a shame because eventually every rural/remote dwelling will have to take similar precations, and its only the people using the device most regularly who are inconvenienced the most.
any thoughts / suggestions welcome.
Thanks S

The solar panel will just keep the battery charged. For a correctly sized solar panel (you’d be amazed how many are undersized for the task) it can generate and keep the battery topped up even on a cloudy day. Dads installations sometimes have a wind turbine too to make doubly sure it’s charged or if that may suit better. It depends on the number of operations per day you expect it to do too.
It’s amazing how many of these he does as the convenience and security of remote controlled gates in isolated locations is extremely handy. Obviously the more electrics you add (like the above, then keypads, zappers, timers, mobile phone entry etc) the costs soon start to ramp up.

Yes get the 24v openers from Came. The control box which runs on mains, has an option to put in a battery charging card and you can either buy 2 x 12v sealed lead acid batteries from your Came supplier or just use a similarly sourced alternative. I can have a look at our openers and tell you what’s needed if you like.

We made the gates , bought the the motors and control box and fitted ourselves , cost about a grand , 20 foot opening
where did you source the motors and control box from?
did you get the tracking and rollers as well?

fancying a 6m setup that's about 300m from power supply so might put power in, might duct it and fit CCTV later. but im not thinking the 10k amount!!! I liked the sound of 1k and make the gate and fit it yourself etc.

don't the gate kits come with the safety stuff required? like over load and safety beams?

are phone types better than remotes now? as your not supposed to be on phone getting near to the gate while on the road?

Rolling centre are very good for the kits, they keep going through periods of not wanting to deal direct and only go through installers which is a pia

Hope you are sitting down when you get the quote for it fitted.

We were quoted £25k for a cantilever gate 4.5mtr opening.
Needless to say, will do the fabrication of the gate and groundwork ourselves. Then get the automation / safety beams etc fitted afterwards, as there is no way on gods earth it comes anywhere near that kind of money.
All power etc is there already!

I've had a few customers ask about electric gates. The price that they had been quoted just for a 10ft double garden gate was phenomenal.

Tell me about it - some people just think they can chrge what they like. For us - all electrics etc are there, so just concrete base, add gates etc.

Sufice to say - I will build my own gates, then get someone to connect the electrics and safety etc to comply.
