We worked in N I but homesickness was bad for the other half so went back to Wales. As soon as we set foot in Heathrow we realised we had made a huge mistake! It took us 5 years of hard slog milking cows in Pembs before we were able to get our Resident visa for N Z, we were on the plane as soon as we could, we didn't want to wait any longer.
Best cure for home sickness is a trip back "home"

We were farming in Pembrokeshire, owned cows and machinery. We managed to get NZ residency under the business immigration category. This was before things tightened up, we wouldn't have a show of doing it now.
you did the right thing, i am guessing the capital requirement was way lower then.
You missed bse, f&mx2 , etcetc, you sold quota and cows high?

Was a good move,we didn't have any quota ,tied to land,so only had cows. Thankfully missed out on all the issues you guys went through, as well as all the EU crap. Land prices were a lot lower back then but are comparable now, the exchange rate was in our favour as well.

Since 97, farming has been one disaster after another.

Right all you Kiwis. I have just booked airline tickets to vist NZ from June 7th to June 30th 2017 (I know it's your winter but it's the only time I can really get away for that long from here) for an initial look-see around NZ and to help focus our ideas on where we might look to live when we move. We're about 6 years away yet anyway but this is the start of the planning.

I'm flying in to Christchurch and out via Christchurch or Aukland but we're thinking South Island would most likely suit us better. I'm looking to start building my itinery to get an idea of the farming culture of the different areas of South/North islands, ideally meeting and talking to farmers, farm suppliers and the Ministry.

Having done quite alot of background reading @Mrs Holwell is leaning towards the Nelson / Blenheim area but I'm not sure yet. We've a fairly open mind on what type of farming we'd like to do and I have experience of Arable, Beef, Sheep and Dairy. Isolation doesn't scare us, we're looking to escape the massively crowded UK home counties anyway. We'd like a better quality of life and if the scenery was to die for then all the better. We should be bringing considerable funds to invest and would be prepared to look at share farming or leasing out part of the farm we eventually buy.

Have you any suggetions where to go could I drop in and chat? I'm happy to contribute money/time/return hosting for your help.

I'd suggest you fly in to Christchurch and out of Auckland, the NZ Agricultural Fieldays 2017 are just out of Hamilton on the 14-27 June 2017, and your more than welcome to call in for a brew and a yarn or two.:)

Bit jealous.
As has been said try to check out field days which will be well worth the trip there. Only going for 3 weeks I would be spending most of it in he South Island as that is where you are looking at moving to and just a week in the north island at field days and having a quick look around.

Maybe they are not used for transportation, like here if you want to shift stuff you put it on a truck. Tractors are for fieldwork not trucking.

That only works with a dry climate, hence tractors in UK have to do field/road.............and that is why you need a hitch that's quick change.
