What is the opinion of escaping stock?
I have a problem with a neighbours young cattle escaping into my hay field!

I have one five acre hay field, which all winter I have spent hours trapping moles, and during the spring I have spot sprayed a lot of docks, the field is looking good, apart from the flattened grass which was the result of 22 of my neighbours cattle escaping three times! any diplomatic advice?

My cows ,200, broke into a neighbours field set aside for hay,two nights ago. Probably in there half an hour, bit of flattened grass where we corralled them to get them out. I didn’t hesitate to tell my neighbour that I would ring NFU insurance on Monday and get them to sort it out. It’s what you have insurance for.

A neighbour had this happen from another neighbour. Offending farmer was straight on the case with insurers and all was sorted diplomatically.

Forget the insurers, tell your neighbour you will shoot any cattle that enter your land, that may sound a bit crude but l had a problem with a farmer? five miles away, always had cattle out, one Sunday, my first weekend off for six months, his cattle broke into our farm and into my cattle, we had been a closed herd for over twenty years, unvaccinated but with a clear test for BVD within weeks our cattle started to abort then the mothers died, in four years from 2002 to 2006 we lost our 145 ped dairy herd and young stock, over 400 head in all, yes l was insured with theNFU MUTUAL and had been for nearly fifty years but so had the other chap, when l rang them they told me if you think you have a claim go get yourself a good solicitor, the result of this was in short. l lost my dairy herd, my milk processing business, l had to sell my family home and farmstead to pay for the losses, my advice is still as above but for hells sake dont trust the insurers l trusted, over my sixty years in the business l sold my surplus dairy cattle all over the world from Brazil to Japan and met and talked to many people and businesses at home and abroad but never found anyone that sank as low as the NFU MUTUAL with their lies, bullying and aggressive behaviour.

Sorry to hear your story. I remember when I was insured with NFU MUTUAL and had a claim against another member, that the NFU refused to help ,as they won't take sides between members! I don't know if that is still their policy as I left at renewal and have had nothing to do with them since!

There’s no way I’d own land on which I didn’t have a decent boundary fence of my own, regardless of whether I had stock or not.

The trouble is, fences deteriorate whether you have stock or not. I've had the situation where brambles grew up behind and over the fence. The weight of heavy snow pulled a lot of the staples out.
