Ewe listeria cure?

2 weeks ago i had what i think was my first ewe with listeria, holding head to the side and loss of vision in one side. Would get up and fall over etc. Carrying triplets. Meticam and 10ml pen and strep for 5 days and she was back to normal really. Lambed the other night and its flared up again. All lambs off her now. But i have had her on meticam, pen strep, calcium and propylene glycol but no improvement this time round. Any ideas? She can hardly get up now.

Sounds like you've done everything you can. The ball is in her court now. She is a sheep don't forget. Sometimes I can cure listeria, sometimes I use all the sameness rest mental and they just won't respond at all

Can silage bring it on more as haylage bales? Decided to feed pit silage to triplets this year as i wasnt sure if there was enough bales. Cutting out middle of face with a sheargrab though.... ?
I was told either mouldy silage,or silage that had secondary fermentation, soil in silage or worstly silage that has come into contact with soil after opening it the chromosomes mix and cause havoc. It appears to be worse when the temperature is low too

I agree soil in silage is the problem, can be anywhere in the pitface. Bad news with sheep in my experience cattle deal with it better or avoid it better

Its a horrible disease. Along with Metacam etc normaly give high dose ~25ml penicillin every 12hrs for 3-5 days if no improvement after 5d we say goodbye. Vet said its all about getting the concentration of penicilin in the blood high enough for it to get into the brain if that makes sense.

Maybe i should of been giving more as 10ml. How successful are you after using 150-250ml?

Cured five out of seven last yr, havent had any so far this year. Gave one steroid (Dexaject) to abort the lambs as she was really down. Try and catch them early, one ear down and floppy lip stage.

Only ever had one ewe with it , and massive A/Bs sorted her . Had a cow , that was cutting it's adult teeth get it once . Vet reckoned that the tooth loss had allowed bugs in . What a b'tard , thought she'd die . Couldn't swallow above 10% for some days and thought she'd die . 10 days of big A/B shots etc and she was fine again . Took a while to get her condition back on again though !

Ive given 25ml Pen Strep twice a day in 60kg ewes when I'm out of straight penicillin. Seems Pen and Strep both short acting in sheep; vet suggests 12-hourly re-dosing. Hows the ewe doing?

She stands and walks a bit but cant feel one side of he face, even if i touch her eye ball. Tries to eat haylage but im not sure how much she is swallowing. Eats a few nut.

Dad always moves the feeders around. Leftovers in the bottom of the feeder could be a cause
Absolutely spot on dont leave any silage any more than 3 days after its opened up from the bale or pit. Soil will ferment /heat up when the air is loosed in so thats where and how it develops. We would make sure that bales are cleared in 3 days and would move feeder everytime even in shed as ewes will not pick at it . a Little waste sometimes but we do not have listeria anymore . We would also anyway put ecobale inoculant on the silage bale as it is made and try as best we can to eliminate mole tumps.

How much is a big jag of penicillin? Can you over dose on pen and strep?

Hi, it needs daily short acting oxytetracyclin or equivalent, plus metacam. Definitely a Vet decision as things will have changed since I was advised last, and if you haven't treated a case before.

If she can't drink, give her careful sips of water from a drencher - it can take some patience.

Hope she does start to improve. It sounds as though she's had a flare up, poor thing.

(Had one given antib's intravenously as caught late, but he died.)
