Ewes aborted and other issues

I'm having a frustrating time of late. About 3 weeks ago or more had a single go off her feet then abort. She had to be put down. Then last Sunday had another single abort and another twin scanned ewe with what looked like pneumonia.Have got a new vet practice out on Wednesday for chat and look. Sickly sheep had a bad fluke infection and she's died today. Have had another triplet abort today to. In total 5s aborted so far. They aren't due to start to lamb for just over 2 weeks yet. Vet was great to chat to. He said could be knocks or stress causing them to abort but after today's one spoke to him again and have injected All inlamb ones with alamycin today. He thinks silage low energy and to make sure plenty Meal given and I fluked, boluses and heptavac them yesterday as planned originally. Now have a ewe this evenin lying down with white foamy stuff around mouth and a wet runny nose. She was fine when I had her in pen for injecting after dinner. Just wondering if anyone has seen these issues before. Feeling rather disheartened
Sorry for long post

I think heptavac can be quite stressful on the sheep if you have a fluke issue behind the scenes the extra stress may push a few over the edge. I don't think there is anything else you can do other than treat the problem ewes as they show up with calcium and twin lamb. Our vet sells a drench that treats twin lamb and contains calcium. If it wasn't for bad luck you wouldn't have any luck.

Get some Samples off to the lab so you know what your dealing with. Have silage tested so you know how much cake to feed ewes. Seems to be alot of guessing going on here at the mo.

I've had very good results with toxovac and enzovac this year. I would highly recommend doing them this summer.
I've had a lot less trouble this year because of it.
Might also be worth bolussing earlier as a separate job so they are in top condition for heptavac.
Good luck.

I toxovac all new breeding ewes each year. Whej got results from them few back didn't have to do enzo vaccination as didn't have it. Only have 40 odd bales left of 3 different fields so not sure if I'd have a worthwhile result even if I was let get Samples. Lambs away to lab so see what that brings up. Took many a long long time to be let get a new vet practice as it is never mind much else

As long as l can remember, the last 2 weeks before lambing is a nightmare, prolapse, abortion, dead ewes, you name it, also staggers ,no end of trouble, so any body on here that says they don't have any of those problems are lying or don't have sheep. Remember sheep only aim in life is to die. If ewes are inside its worse because all the problems are there in front of you, once you have the first living lambs it will make you feel better.

I was having different people telling me different times for vaccination. Some telling me 2 weeks some saying 4 weeks. I thought I'd spilt the difference and go 3 but it ended up 2 and Abit weeks Instesd

Have had some abortion in our Texel yearlings, also. All were Toxo/Enzo vaccinated back in the spring and had 4 abort 2 months before lambing, could only tell by a tiny bit of blood.Another has aborted a week or two from lambing.Only 55 Texel Ewes in total ! The commercials ,which are lambing well, have had no such issues.

What concerns me is I'm already over 30 odd ewes down after being empty and sold for culls. 15 ewes and 18 ewe lambs. Staring with less ewes inlamb anyway and hoped it would mean a easier lambijf and less expensive but isn't turning out that way so far

could be that schmallenberg , we had it the same last year , few abortions , almost silent , 4-6 weeks pre lambing , you will soon know , we ended up with one dead deformed and one live in twins , All ok this year down here so far

As above, they don't do trials for the fun of it, when you hear of neighbours saying it caused problems done at that stage so I did it different and was better, its due to other random factors and a coincidence!! If any consolation, the saying there is always someone worse off than yourself is true, sadly its me. Lost more sheep in last week than last year!! Just starting lambing, had a couple of fit ewes drop dead, in hindsight stupid, but it happens at start of lambing doesn't it... all out, brought a couple in to lamb and tight, lambs dead id guess 2/3 days, ewes from putting hand in to 20 mins later swelled like a beach ball, both were lambs breached. Thought id failed and checked stock badly, and been lambing 2 days and missed them. Had more since, bloods gone of and hope for results tomorrow, sure salmonella, no silage/ hay been fed, water clean, just wondering if its one bunch that were on no grass that I fed hard feed about 2 weeks ago, wasn't feeding on soil, but so wet as soon as feed down and ewes came, it was soiled, would that be enough to cause salmonella? Cant think what else, these are full term lambs, as said, about 2 days dead, so dry inside ewe and from starting to lamb to an hour they are blown up with toxins to the size of a beach ball Thoroughly miserable, and makes going around the ewes a depressing job for fear of what you will see, it was bad enough going around before with the weather, but now seems even worse!!

I don't know if this will help or not, but last year in run up to lambing I had a problem with fluke(1st time ever). Treated them but I did lose a few. So I give them extra corn, molasses and made sure plenty supply of minerals were available.
Some of lambs were born small but I did get through it, and small lambs soon caught up. So if you do feed extra don't worry about lambs being too big

Affected sheep were lambing a week to 10 days early so it were a battle to get lambs going for a few days. But they did
Hope things improve for ya will
