Ewes dying

They were done in March....

Should be fine, but the weather here is 20 degrees one minute and then -3 at night.........puts a bit of stress on a heavily milking animal.

Also i have found the cheviots to be in a league of their own........on most thing!!!!!

My OH and I always say that if you don't get upset/affected by your animals dying, you should probably quit the job.

That is black leg/clostridial. How many strains does heptivac p cover? @bovine

Using Heptivac P is a waste of time, doesn't cover enough strains, trouble is that you will only realize this when you end up in the OP situation.

I have had 2 dead Cheviot yowes in the same field today.

Both with young lambs at foot.

First yowe died overnight.

2nd was reported to me as "having a tremor fit" at tea time.

By the time I got there it, too was dead.

I'm thinking staggers.

They have gone from bare lambing field to a new field with an abundance of grass.

Staggers???

Would / could high mag buckets help to prevent more going down??

That would be my thought...spring grass low in mag, get some buckets out pronto!

It certainly wouldn't do any harm.
IME they don't take to high mag buckets very easily, that's why we always have them out a month before they lamb so they get used to them.

I put out blocks but also mag in the water as they are drinking a lot at the moment.

Thank you. No more dead yet and the weather has improved so hopefully... Although they are due a move which I'm a bit scared to do.
The knacker man couldn't believe how blown up the ewe was - I reckon if he hadn't been on Monday he wouldn't have believed that I hadn't called it in for a week...

Lost a ewe 3 weeks ago (remember back when it was warm and the grass was growing ) to staggers.

I have cattle mag buckets (without copper) out at all ewes - tried to get sheep buckets but merchant said they never sell any so don't keep them, despite being on website

There is always a ewe or lambs at a bucket every time i go round fields having a lick - even though they've hardly dented the buckets. What they don't take, the cattle will when they get put up.

Get some got. It'll take no hurt

We give bought in stock the Prescott treatment (two jabs) anyway. Not been unknown for the odd one to escape vaccination here so why would anywhere else be different?

i lost 8 ewes over 5 days just over a week ago. With the exact same symtom as yours. I saved a few with magniject 9 if i seen them in time all got mag buckets now but they dont seem to have been hard on them.
