I cut the elbow off and ground the faces flush

My plan being to drill out old stud and re-tap for M10.

Before i start drilling, will this work, or will i need to go smaller or bigger than original to avoid the original threads?

spend a bit of time making sure your on center with the punch, the center of what you see isnt the center of the stud.
start with a 3mm or so and up to 5mm and then to the core of the existing stud, if your good on the drill and if your .5mm or so above the core size you just might be able to pick out the old thread, it means spending some time at it but it keeps you sharp....

or you could just blast it out of it with a helicoil thread repair insert.
or as suggested just make it bigger.
i like original but thats just me.

Drilled the bulk out after setting a punch using the new elbow to centre it. Then used a little punch to start pulling away the old thread, it broke after one turn though and i couldn't get purchase on the next bit.

Bolted the new elbow on temporarily and set the centre punch for the next hole and that went much the same, will finish up tomorrow and get it back on the machine
