Is there a local milkman who would take them as part of his round as an addition, also enquire with market gardens to stock them, and there is nothing stopping you setting up in a busy layby say every other Saturday and selling them from your car.

The last milko here must have been 30 odd years ago.
The legend who was Mr. Jack Edwards. He was going long after Unigate finished.
Edit
Forgot to say I like the lay-by idea.

how about using over year hens and calling them 'rescued rangers' ?:)
Tried that. Most of them are laid out, stary eyed psycho hens who lay thin shelled rubbish and eat any egg or injured hen they see. Not good for the farmer's soul. Hybrid layers are not the first generation Rhode Red / Sussex cross or similar that they used to be. They are highly developed laying machines, programmed to fire eggs out for a set amount of days and then self destruct.

There is a limited market for what you are trying to sell, and the bigger players can undercut your prices, to people on a budget an egg is an egg and mostly want them as cheap as possible.
yeap, but I'm not in the market for bowing down to this market. I also want to enjoy what I do and know it right for the farm and the environment. There is def a demand there are plenty of people on low budget switched on to good local food. If I wanted to I could get them stamped and go for a larger audience and for the small retailers but at the moment we wanted to check the market and know demand. Better to start very small and keep control. Yes, there are plenty of egg sellers out there but its the marketing and the quality that pays. Double yolkers just gets people wildly excited too!

We are in organic conversion so my description is 'naturally fed' 'GM free' and in the pamphlet I explain they are 'organically fed' The hens are now on the field that the cows were on so having an exciting time scratching and eating bugs.

I totally applaud what you are doing, I really do. I'm on a similar mission and know what you are up against.

What I would say is that you can't base your pricing on Riverford or any other organic egg seller. First you are not certified yet and I know that is only a matter of time but it does count. Secondly, these people have marketing clout and that gets customers. It's not fair and I would buy your pastured eggs any day over some random SA certified organic eggs but that's because I know that you can be SA certified and have hens paddling around in shite for half their short lives.

But you are up against it and while part of me applauds your defensive attitude to your pricing strategy, you've still got to sell it. Will be interested to know how you get on. I would like to know that there is a good market for a premium egg where the end customer actually gave a flying f**k about how it was produced.

I often see my farming friends in supermarkets buying caged eggs and the cheapest Danish bacon. My parents even do it. Hard to keep the faith when your own are selling you and themselves down the river.
