Is there a local milkman who would take them as part of his round as an addition, also enquire with market gardens to stock them, and there is nothing stopping you setting up in a busy layby say every other Saturday and selling them from your car.
baggsy the norfolk franchise
Tried that. Most of them are laid out, stary eyed psycho hens who lay thin shelled rubbish and eat any egg or injured hen they see. Not good for the farmer's soul. Hybrid layers are not the first generation Rhode Red / Sussex cross or similar that they used to be. They are highly developed laying machines, programmed to fire eggs out for a set amount of days and then self destruct.how about using over year hens and calling them 'rescued rangers' ?
yeap, but I'm not in the market for bowing down to this market. I also want to enjoy what I do and know it right for the farm and the environment. There is def a demand there are plenty of people on low budget switched on to good local food. If I wanted to I could get them stamped and go for a larger audience and for the small retailers but at the moment we wanted to check the market and know demand. Better to start very small and keep control. Yes, there are plenty of egg sellers out there but its the marketing and the quality that pays. Double yolkers just gets people wildly excited too! There is a limited market for what you are trying to sell, and the bigger players can undercut your prices, to people on a budget an egg is an egg and mostly want them as cheap as possible.
I have seen a few people selling in lay-byes, one chap near durham sells honey every Friday in the summerThe last milko here must have been 30 odd years ago.
The legend who was Mr. Jack Edwards. He was going long after Unigate finished.
Edit
Forgot to say I like the lay-by idea.
