Extase

I had some that yielded much worse than expected two years ago (did around 6.7t/ha). Hit 14% protein though with and without a Nufol dose. Decent kg/hl too. Will probably try and aim for over 12.5% this year though as ADM mills will take it as a group 1.

Last year put on a more typical feed dose at 220kgs with no Nufol and it yielded decently (9-9.5t/ha) but proteins were only around the 11.5% mark.

What level of N did you put on when the yield was 6.7t/ha (excluding the Nufol) ?

Also, have you noticed any Septoria this year yet?

My experience of higher yielding milling wheat is that most years it requires 300kgN/ha to get anywhere near 13% protein. I don’t see extase being any different.

There’s a thread on here somewhere last year about Extase. Loads of issues with it from multiple sources.
It’s been looked into deeply by independant agronomy group.
Essentially what happend was most of the places there was real issues involved late su herbicides and frost. A lot of people were caught out by how much of a quick developer it is and got timings wrong.
I believe quite a few were so vocal about it because they had their whole area into extase!
There is nothing wrong with the variety.

Just like so many things - a few are very vocal and not necessarily the whole truth.

Have you tried to hit 13% protein with the variety? If so, what was/is your experience?

I have grown it the past 3 years and I’ve been very impressed with the variety. No need for a T0 and in fact half of never even got a T1 last year. None of it got a T3.

However, the Septoria resistance is not quite so good as it was and we will be giving it a moderate T1 Program this year. It is looking well and needs a PGR program. Probably a couple of litres of CCC, but no Modus as I’m convinced it is too harsh and damages yield.

I thought the problems were caused by being drilled too early and then the very last frosts last spring, that's what I was told anyway

That's what I heard from NIAB. As said above, it's otherwise a great variety. I really like the growth habit which is so powerful and seems to shake off any not so amazing drilling conditions. Early to harvest too which helps spread out the workload.

On Thursday 26th September, we’re holding a webinar for farmers to go through the guidance, actions and detail for the expanded Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) offer. This was planned for end of May, but had to be delayed due to the general election. We apologise about that.
