f**k Up Fortnight

There were inches of rain, yesterday. Just brought in two doubles, each with one lamb needing to have the ewe very close because a) they've got miserable and hungry, and b) one is highly likely to be starting joint ill. Also have a good 2-tth d. in the field, so now there's a massive fortnight old single to hand rear. Only consolidation is it is just the one orphaned, because had there been a lamb available to twin on when he was born, there'd be two.

No f**k ups to report (so far 🤞) today.
The penultimate ewe lambed first thing this morning .

As it's my birthday, it'd be nice if the other procrastinator could get her ar$e into gear and wrap the job up for another year.
My present haul revolves mainly around beer and chocolate...

...which is just perfect for me 😋😋
Although I have also got a rather snazzy torch from sister in law and her husband.
A much loved Soul, we can tell.... :)

When's the party?? We can BYOB to save some of the pressure on your stocks!

I see there were some mahoooosive storms your way, happily not as much here, but a wetting for us overnight. :(

Got most of the land worked for the bumblebird mix and even some drilled, but stopped now. Mow for first cut Mon/Tues, pickup Tues/Wed. All roundupped so half dead now! ;)

Sheep continue to catch us out... Off to the vet for Synulox for another Mastitis sufferer in a moment. Both with twins, and both had seemed short of milk at lambing, so looks like some sub-clinical issues early on?

First (looks like) joint ill last night, so caught and jabbed and 🤞

Hope they recover quickly.

We didn't have the worst of the rains, and no thunder. It did clear in the afternoon, but went chilly overnight. Still had to tip water out of the feeding troughs first thing, though.

In better news, it looks like the ferti has kicked in, so after the next grazing round, there's hope for some leeway to shut in a couple of fields for a light cut. Then to graze hard ready for Project Overseed with a sprink of the herbal mix.

Seems like it's been a long, drawn out job this year.
Here's hoping the rest of you get finished soon.

Day 3 of sun 😳 we'll no doubt pay for it soon. 8 ewes left to go. All stock lying in the sun, exhausted from the previous weather I reckon. Heavy heavy going until now, but nothing like what you lot down south have had.
Got the bees sorted over the last few days.
How are your bees? There were two feral swarms here for the late summer and into autumn last year, but not a peep from their nesting sites so far, at least.

@primmiemoo 3 hives survived and flying. Two hives died out early winter. I suppose F*kup Fortnight starts earlier for bees 😂🙄 and lasts a few months actually. Shop wants honey 🤷 but the weather is a good month behind.
I think maybe they swarmed late summer, sh!t weather and the new queens didn't mate with enough drones. Not much sheepy happening in winter so I refurbed a couple of hives. OH's grandkids painted the fish themed top box👍. Bees weren't too pee'd off at being rehoused yesterday.

pulled another ewe with twins off the field today...plenty of grass/shelter but think I've let my flock get to old

think this needs to be my last lambing...I'm just not good enough at the management side
Never! Just get tough on culling. You'll get the same lambs from fewer sheep. It was mental when I came here, if they still had 4 legs they got put to the tup, it's easy to get working so hard you don't have time to sit and think. Massive amount of stupid work to keep everything alive, which we didn't.
4ish crop is max here going forward.

No, I’m sure most are guilty of that, I’m one of the worst. Just look at a ewe in the autumn and although it might look OK then, think what will it be like after plodging around in mud for 3 months carrying triplets.

Me too ! Guilty as charged.
Just got home tonight and there's a half eaten lamb in a feed bag on my woodshed!
Will have to trudge round in the rain this evening to try and work out who's missing a lamb🧐....nice of whoever dropped it off but leaves me no clue which field it was found in!

Absolute rubbish. You’ve just had too much going on. This winter found out any ewe that wasn’t quite upto it. I’ve a field full of ewes I’m feeding because their too thin.

You definitely aren’t the only one thinking, enough of this. My advise, wean, be totally honest with yourself and cull anything not quite right and won’t stay in, see what’s left and make a decision then. I culled 30% of the flock last year including ewes that reared twins that combined weight didn’t equal the average of a single. What a difference. No runts. No one quarter etc.

Or, neighbour just sold his Suffolk x mule flock, take the lot, £120 a life. Never been a better time to get out. (@Estate fencing. )

Why does it matter who it belongs to?
