Farming in France

A word of warning to those looking in France… in the time I have been here, my home farm is still worth the same as I paid for it whereas land/houses in England have trebled.
still, at least there are no gains tax to worry about👍

Would that be true of land price all over France? When you say gains tax, is that something that would looked at annually or on death/sale of property?

It all sounds very complicated 🤔
My two farms in France are owned by a uk ltd company. I can just transfer my shares to my kids just as if that ltd company owned land in the uk (as it did before)🤷‍♂️
If you don't mind me asking, did you buy your farms with a LTD company or did you sell them to the company yourself

I would say land prices in most of france are linked to the value of their potential output unlike the UK where land prices are influenced by many factors not really linked to farming.

Land prices have risen slightly but more in line with general long term agricultural prices.

I would say you need to sell roughly the same tonnes of wheat or kgs of beef etc to buy a hectare as you did 20 years ago.

its how it should be in the uk, land price should be worth its viable financial output.

Hi all
Just back from my holiday in SW France near Perpignan on the coast, not a lot happeningaround there farming wise, just some vineyards, then spent a few days in the Pyrenees near Axles th thermes, highly recommended the scenery and mountain passes are stunning.
So driving from Foix to Toulouse was the only farming area that we passed, so I have a few questions on things that we saw.
The main arable crops seem to be sunflowers and maize.
What is the maize used for, I take it that its combined is it used for animal feed or human consumption ?
We passed on field of maize that seemed to have leaves topped off, what would they do this for?
What are the Sunflowers used for? (I never see French sunflower oil for sale or is it used for other purposes).
Another observation was that the French are such good motorway drivers, they always pull in after overtaking, no middle or fast lane hogging and traffic flows.

Thanks
