Is it true that a fastrac 3185 has exactly the same engine as a daf45 lorry ?? and has anyone fitted a bigger engine in a 3185 ??
Getting a good 3185 is getting hard now, get a 3230 with wide tyres you wont regret it ! chip a 3230 and they are awesome tractors.for about the last 3 years I keep thinking a 3185 would be a better solution to harvest logistics here than a short term hire tractor
trouble is finding a good one !
can't say I really rate them for field work though, the small wheel equipment is just too limiting meaning small footprint and high pressures
3230 for sale at Driffield, think it's done approx' 7K hrs on mainly haulage, fitted with an HGV style trailer hitch like wagon and drag have. £35,000 ono rings a bell, and I think it's an 09 model. Tidy and well maintained. That would mean another driver, as I'm not going to sit on it!
I've heard a few stories about the first ptronic boxes having problems. I've also heard that the gearbox has been completely reworked and is now ok. How true this is I have no idea. I see Jcb now offer a 3 year driveline warranty as standard though so I guess they think they've got it right now.The old ones with eaton gearbox are fetching big money now because jcbs own gearbox isn't proving to be very reliable and cost a fortune to repair. Many in the trade won't touch xtra models.
Yes I've seen it on there as wellThe york one is on ebay now

would this be that 145??i know they are like marmite but the older ones (145's 155-65) are getting cheap now. They seem to still look half reasonable as well compared to many other tractors of that age.
I did think that one would be a good winter project at some point when funds allow. What goes wrong with them, are parts reasonable and are they easy to work on?
Did have a quick look at the 145 that was at York sale today. It had a fist sized hole in the engine block which I think would have put most punters off including me.
That's the one. I saw the advert a few days ago and avoided using the dealers name as I didn't want the thread to go over old ground againwould this be that 145??View attachment 72915
Here we go again the voice of common sense, change oils, service regular, grease it up!! Countless owners I know never offer as much as a hint of servicing and there usually the ones on the forums slagging the machinery off!! The old saying goes a bad workman always blames his tools!!I drove a "spare" Fastrac 3185 that was only used when the ten newer ones were busy. It had over 18000 hours on it after I'd finished hauling slurry with it. That was over a year ago and I know it's had lots of use since. Same engine, clutch and gearbox as it left the factory with.
The contractors in question change all oils and filters on the dot. The thing is they are that good at doing it that even this job is a "before breakfast" task. They keep a stock of basic spares so in the event of the most common failures they are never left waiting for parts from dealers. I learnt a lot about making machines earn their keep at that outfit!
Well said. Here we go again the voice of common sense, change oils, service regular, grease it up!! Countless owners I know never offer as much as a hint of servicing and there usually the ones on the forums slagging the machinery off!! The old saying goes a bad workman always blames his tools!!
