for about the last 3 years I keep thinking a 3185 would be a better solution to harvest logistics here than a short term hire tractor

trouble is finding a good one !

can't say I really rate them for field work though, the small wheel equipment is just too limiting meaning small footprint and high pressures

Getting a good 3185 is getting hard now, get a 3230 with wide tyres you wont regret it ! chip a 3230 and they are awesome tractors.

The old ones with eaton gearbox are fetching big money now because jcbs own gearbox isn't proving to be very reliable and cost a fortune to repair. Many in the trade won't touch xtra models.

I've heard a few stories about the first ptronic boxes having problems. I've also heard that the gearbox has been completely reworked and is now ok. How true this is I have no idea. I see Jcb now offer a 3 year driveline warranty as standard though so I guess they think they've got it right now.

My 3230 was the 2nd off the production line with the ptronic box and only had a sensor issue so far in 4 years.

We have a 2170 that we are looking to sell soon, will have approx 5100 hours, very good condition and well maintained - just fitted 2 new tyres and the other 2 are around 80%. It's spent it's life spraying and corn carting. Does have front linkage and PTO. Contact me if anyone is interested and wants more details

i know they are like marmite but the older ones (145's 155-65) are getting cheap now. They seem to still look half reasonable as well compared to many other tractors of that age.

I did think that one would be a good winter project at some point when funds allow. What goes wrong with them, are parts reasonable and are they easy to work on?

Did have a quick look at the 145 that was at York sale today. It had a fist sized hole in the engine block which I think would have put most punters off including me.
would this be that 145??

I drove a "spare" Fastrac 3185 that was only used when the ten newer ones were busy. It had over 18000 hours on it after I'd finished hauling slurry with it. That was over a year ago and I know it's had lots of use since. Same engine, clutch and gearbox as it left the factory with.

The contractors in question change all oils and filters on the dot. The thing is they are that good at doing it that even this job is a "before breakfast" task. They keep a stock of basic spares so in the event of the most common failures they are never left waiting for parts from dealers. I learnt a lot about making machines earn their keep at that outfit!
Here we go again the voice of common sense, change oils, service regular, grease it up!! Countless owners I know never offer as much as a hint of servicing and there usually the ones on the forums slagging the machinery off!! The old saying goes a bad workman always blames his tools!!
The Last time I looked oil and paper is still cheaper than repairing metal? Nice one farmystu..

Needed to replace the rear diff in a 1135.
Oil drained
Wheels off
Top hats off
Half shaft s out
Wheels back on
Drive shaft off
PTO shaft off
PTO stub out
Diff out
Take to dealer for a rebuild.
Think it did take about 4 hour to get out and a bit longer to put it back.
What other tractor can you do that?
