a well established crop of wheat does not need more than an inch of rain a month regularly to produce a high yield even on thin land

That's a complete and utter nonsense, yellow belly.

And rather demeaning of the efforts of light land producers everywhere, to boot.

According to our extensive irrigation trials here, it's more like four inches a month.

Precipitation demand all depends on crop abstraction, root density/depth, evapotranspiration, surface tension and porosity. There's no one figure for all soils.
