Feeding Oats

Works for me, just make sure you mix it well in the hoppers, also better with pellets than nuts as they can’t sort them as well

So, went and got 1/2 tonne of rolled oats in small bags yesterday and started feeding it mixed with the lamb finisher 50 :50. Early to say but they’ve licked the feeding troughs and hoppers clean so far. Happy days, €70 a tonne cheaper then finisher.

At what age do cattle not digest oats? You must have to roll them for cattle at some age?
Only a small proportion pass through without being broken down. Ruminants chew the cud, and so each grain gets a second chance anyway of being 'dented' so that gut flora and fauna can continue their job of digesting them.
Any whole grain passing through provide food for jackdaws and rooks.

Apologies if its Abit off topic but, was collecting some lamb finisher today and noticed that they have ground maize available at the same price as the oats. Any benefit to be had by adding this into the mix ?

Thanks @exmoor dave. I think I will try something similar with my ewes and cut out the buckets as much as possible.
Hi I know it’s a old discussion but just doing some research on Oat usage for my NE mules. I was wondering how you got on with feeding your in lamb ewes? I have started using them for calves and mixing them in the lamb creep this year. Seemed to help make it go further. I have always feed my ewes a 18% nut upto 0.5kg at lambing. Along with high energy licks!

I fed approx 1 ton of oats to my ewes last winter (75 ewes). It saved me a ton of meal I would say and I didn’t buy any high energy licks. I house my ewes on wire mesh and I found the wire stayed cleaner when they were getting oats and meal mixed as the dung was a bit dryer and didn’t stick to the wire the same. When they went over to meal only they were a bit looser and dirty. Ewes seemed to do grand on it.

What sort of ratio was you feeding it at? And quantities? I thought I might keep up feeding a similar amount of cake as usual (upto 0.5kg/head/day) but mix some oats to release energy and slow the cake going through, and do away with the energy licks. Then once ewes have lambed possibly mix 50:50 oats cake as tick over feed for the first week after lambing before turn out .

I started them off 3 months before lambing just giving them oats (0.25kg or even less maybe). I increased up to around 0.5kg at 6 weeks before lambing. I then mixed in some meal and just kept increasing it and decreasing the oats on the run up to lambing. I increased it back up to 50/50 gradually once outside after lambing
