Feeding the Ewe book

Those of us of a certain age might well remember an old MLC handbook (folk moaned about levies being wasted then too:rolleyes:) titled ‘Feeding the Ewe’. First published in 1988, it was a great text, used by many students and flockmasters wanting to formulate rations.

Our sheep discussion group had an on-farm meeting the other afternoon, with the excellent Kate Phillips in attendance as visiting consultant/speaker. I was pleased to discover that she, Leslie Stubbings and Dr Gill Povey have colluded to update that book, which has just been released under the same title by AHDB as part of the Better Returns Program.

There are regularly threads on here asking about feeding sheep, working out rations, etc, so I thought it worthwhile posting this. I would advise that it’s well worth a read, even if it only refreshes the minds of those that already think they know everything. It’s available free, your levies have paid for it.;)

but on page 8 re. 'Energy' on ... the diagram ..and...

Figure 4. The relationship between digestibility and residency time (rate of digestion) in the rumen

should the right hand graph scale (rate of digestion (hours) .... be the other way up ..ie 0 at the top and 50 at the bottom ?

No. The green line represents the rate of digestion, so straw and hay take vastly longer to digest than molasses. Molasses is also much more completely digested and utilised where more straw comes out the back end than gets used (blue boxes).

More ‘waste of money’activities by AHDB
Let’s face it , any professional farmer shouldn’t need to be told how to feed a ewe

Please note: the above was an attempt at humour off the back of comments on an AHDB thread - understood by some (hence the likes) but open to misinterpretation by those not aware of the comments on the AHDB thread

At a local level the relaunch is seemingly being hijacked by feed companies running meetings trying to sell their amazing sheep feed. The whole point of the book is to maximise productivity with low costs, not just pour compound feed into them.

I wonder how many people will go to a meeting and bother to download or obtain a copy of the book?

It is a great resource.

Independant specialist sheep nutritionalists are a rare breed as well, unlike in the dairy ..
