of course we ought to feed the nation, its our duty, and l will do my very best to do so.
only one stipulation, they have to pay me enough, to re-ignite my patriotism, and l am not cheap. Taken to much crap, for far to long, to feel anything but exploitive. A trend l have learnt from the current buyers habits. To be fair, they are experts, and one should always learn from the best !
Maybe now is a good time for everyone to say ok we will all join the ELMS scheme & plant out all our land to trees & wild flowers for the butterflies as you wanted & you can go hungry?

Loads of farmers think they are owed a living because they are selflessly ‘feeding the nation’. It’s complete tripe.
Well I agree with the "nope" answers but if you feed people you should probably be able to make a living. Not having to be worshipped and not making a loss for doing it are not mutually exclusive positions.

Of course it is, after all why should we work hard just so some other lazy devil can eat, far better we all plant out our farms to wild flowers & live off DEFRA's generosity.

First comes making a living.

Second comes enjoying life whilst making a living.

The second one beggers belief at times, certainly Boris the Clown, Multi Millionare Rewilding Goldsmith & George Useless makes me wonder WTF we pay taxes.

I wish I could chose who eats what I produce because there is no way in hell I would do anything for them.

Only 2 years ago at the start of the 'pandemic' we were key workers, almost heroes, who were allowed to carry on our business pretty much as normal as we had to 'feed the nation' while others sat at home getting 80% of their wages.
Next thing we were being told that we had to be carbon neutral, plant trees and cut down our stocking rate. Now there's a war on and it's our time to shine again by keeping the shelves filled, only this time many have had enough of being preached and badgered at by environmentalists, animal activists and government.
Feeding the nation is overrated in my opinion.

Nope I just have bills to pay but the other thing is as far as jobs go food production must be up there in value ?? Tabs iPhones booze holidays new cars , all sold with advising but food , you’d think it was bad for you

Going to great lengths to seek cheapest fodder/ straw. Outbid others for land rent. Diddle each other for straw / muck deals. Pay ludicrously low prices for tack. Panic buy diesel/ fert. That sort of thing.
Without 100% government control im not sure how you control businesses reacting to markets?

theres farmers round here that want bashing! greed is an awful thing.
I note the same for some time now, there's one or 2 around here also, thing is i dont remember it was like it 40 odd years ago, Dads neighbours seemed to generally have much more respect for each other and didn't constantly want to grab a piece of land to gain a bit more
funny thing is with some of them they don't realise, others can see right through their little conniving tactics . hmm.
