You don't give your location. In England No standalone fencing grants.- unless anyone knows different.
Part of countryside stewardship scheme. - or whatever it's called this year. Usually to protect hedges or keep livestock out of watercourses
If you are not familiar with these schemes best seek guidance from a land agent

Do you install yourself or employ a contractor?

We do it all ourselves, as above you can use a contractor but we found what they want to charge you just to erect the fence if we supplied the materials was very near the grant £/m the grant pays. Not knocking them but at the end of the day the way we’re doing it the grant money covers a lot more of the cost rather than just paying the contractors bill

The OP names him / her self ? Newbie. So maybe not much experience of fencing.
In that situation I would hire a contractor to do part of the job, maybe the bit with all the bends on the bankside . ;)

Then decide if i could do the rest of the job to a decent standard.

Apply for fence plus hedge rather than just fence. The hedge justifies the fence, and you can make money on the hedge to offset any overspend on the fence not covered by the grant.
In Wales here, two years ago I paid for someone to lay a hedge (with my help), I put up a fence, all grant aided. In the end it cost me about the same as me just putting up a new fence, but I got a lovely laid hedge out of it. If I had spent a week extra laying the hedge I would have got it all for free.

Apparently I cant receive the grant at the moment due to being new to the industry , painful

I need to be registered with Rural payments which is no longer available and no possibly to register, so waiting for changes via Deffra maybe towards the summer apparently

If anyone has any other info would be much appreciated

Think you have been given duff information. Fence and hedge is under Countryside Stewardship, all you need is a cph number, it is the SFI which is only open to historic recipients of BPS.

Ok so just the cph you think

A consultant said to apply for a grant in 2024 I needed to claim bps in 2023 all very confusing

Don't pay said consultants invoice. You only need to have been claiming BPS to qualify for SFI. CPH - and as said above SBI number - all you need for CS. Both free and easy to get.

I think that's the problem I am not claiming BPS and have never claimed.

I have an SBI and can get a cph.

Will that allow me to apply for grants etc
