Well I went for a look at this slurry kit today and it was a wasted day ,it was all very rough for its age, the guy started up the smiddy made pump set to have to stop it right away as it had no engine oil pressure, the whole thing looked like a ticking time bomb all the components were of different ages , crane from 1998, engine 2015, compressor 2016 and it was a lottery to when the trailer was made, as for the hose it was ready for the guys bonfire

Who’s going to do it then if the farmer doesn’t want to?
Contract farming is still contracting?
Is the farmer going to be able to pay the rate necessary to enable a profitable business for the contractor?
Lots of contractors fool themselves they have a good business but work 120 hrs a week and pay themselves what!
Contract farming is different, most are established farming businesses with 1000 acres plus looking to spread costs.
Big difference to say a silage contractor needing 8 blokes for several months of the year then a bit of hedge cutting and muck spreading to get them through to the next year. The price of kit is the finisher, 40k rakes and 300k foragers and 20k trailers.
Back in the 80’s the contractor I worked for was on £45 acre all in, before tedding and raking in became fashionable, the era of the Tarrup 307 autoswather, diesel was 3.5ppl and a good bloke was £4hr, admittedly the acreage covered was a lot less but the costs were 20% of today’s machinery.

I see what you mean but maybe if they can’t afford to pay the contractors then the land will come up for rent ? Then possibly the contractor could rent it as he has the machines to do it with ?
Somebody will farm it , maybe neighbouring farmers I appreciate.
It’s whether you view arising difficulties positively or not .
I feel that if one door was to close on contracting as you say another one will open ?
That’s how I view most things (brexit etc) just got to be willing to adapt.
But yes my love of the job does mean that I will work silly hours when needed and possibly don’t always value it .
But as long as I enjoy it I don’t mind , now I’m employing people I have to realistically cover that cost now which has made me study things harder.
In agreement though I do think the cost of machines has got out of kilter with things lately and why I’ve gone for good second hand when I can .
Hopefully manufacturers if sales drop will get real ?
Just my positive spin on it

The ones that will keep going will specialise on certain jobs and buying good used machinery and having an engineers ability.

Paul, I am not sure that it is entirely fair of you to put these photos up, put the shoe on the other foot and think how you would feel if somebody did it you?

And yes I know It will never happen to you ect ect.
Photo's were in the catalog for all to see any way, I like to take pride my kit & if for some reason it was all to sell I would be happy for photos of it all to be on the internet , i still never got a phone call from him so that maybe talks you some thing

When you look through they must of had someone on full time finance liaison work, even took a fuel company for 150k. But they did have big shiny jd foragers, some of the biggest.

This has just reminded me to clear out my wallet. Had a card for one of the directors in there, glad i listened to the local gossip for once and never did anything with them.
