Hold on a cotton quacking moment......

The Duck is asking advise about oil spec!

Has his account been hacked by an imposter?

For some reason, possibly to do with brake cooling/lubrication on GIMA transmissions, MF have, for a few years now, changed their default transmission oil spec to a super universal 10W/40 from the age old 10W/30 spec. The cynic in me suspects that it is because only Morris and AGCO seem to sell super universal in 10W/40 viscosity and I am left wondering as to whether it is really better in a piston pump hydraulic system than the thinner stuff.
Yes, I know that in theory both are 10W at normal ambient temperature but in practice the 10W/40 is noticeably slower to pour than the 10W/30 or any UTTO.

Only someone like me would probably think to question the manufacturer's choice, but in the immortal words of the Lady Ga-Ga, I was born this way.

Just an update and a big thank you to everyone that helped with the drag issue.

Went through the calibration procedure today and it completed the range calibration and the main transmission calibration fine. Drag problem has gone, hopefully for the next 5000 hours.

However, it would not calibrate the fluid flywheel solenoid, which is the third calibration option. Comes up almost instantly with a 'Fault' message. The system seems to work fine and although it stalled the other day at a junction when I stopped using the brakes only, I hope that was related to the drag issue [now solved].

Any ideas as to what fault I have and whether this is related to the orange light and t4020 [or whatever. I can never remember the exact code] which come on after a good half to an hour's work?

i know i was taking the pee with my earlier post but it's good to see a cheap conclusion to the problem instead of a costly repair. (y)

Before my vario failed, it did the same creeping. I also changed the potentiometer but that did cure a problem the failed unit was causing. Also changed filters and sensors; but in the end the transmission gave up.
Mine also leaked into trumpet housing, I remember having to suck out the oil. I hope yours doesn’t fail.
My 820’s vario shat itself at the weekend, low loadered it to dealers they want 13.5k to slot a recon one in, has just over 6k hrs on it. What did yours cost to repair? Is an AGCO rip off when it’s seals blown.

716 here had a new vario changed 3 years ago, cost £8700 fitted by local dealer
Since. the factory will price the exchange units in Euros, depending on the timing of your purchase, the Pound may buy 20% less transmission today than it did back then, so it could be that the cost would be nearer £10,000 today.
I taken that the £8700 only covered the cost of the unit and that VAT and labour were on top?

That's a sickner of a bill at 6000 hrs , with repair bills like that on a tractor that cost a premium price the first day , are fendt over rated . It's hard to see where you can spend 13.5 k on a repair .

It was £6700 for the box and around £2000 for labour. Yes I see back then in June 2016 it was 83p so that would add another £800 on to the box price in currency alone. Edited, knew I still had the picture of the invoice.

All bills seem excessive these days.
"The trouble with tractors these days is they are getting too fancy, ok a lot nicer for you lads to drive but a lot bloody harder for us to work on, then of course it becomes more expensive for you" So said to me by an MF fitter in The 1970s about our 168 because it was fitted with an independent PTO as opposed to a live PTO. God only knows what he would think now!

Personally I’d prefer to remove the IPTO pack on an MF of that era than split the damm thing to replace the clutch!! Clutches were a bore on the best of days but changing them every 6 months as Mr Farmer knew better that the pedal was a foot rest and that hand throttle are meant to be set at 1400 rpms constantly took every bit of shine off the job!! :X3::X3::X3::X3:

What were your symptoms or what was it doing at the time?
